Job Description Summary

The Associate or Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs is responsible for the planning, direction, administration, assessment, strategic growth, and continuous quality improvement of graduate programs. The Associate or Assistant Dean will perform duties that support the Mission Statement of WVSOM, including the development of additional graduate programs.

Qualifications/Requirements: The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in a biomedical field, such as biochemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, molecular biology, or cell biology.Associate Dean

Skills Required

  • Minimum of 10 years of teaching experience, including at least 5 years teaching medical students.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience serving as a course director.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible academic leadership or administrative experience. Assistant Dean
    • Minimum of 8 years of teaching experience, including at least 2 years teaching medical students.
    • Minimum of 1 year of experience serving as a course director.
    • Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, curriculum development, assessment, student success initiatives, or program administration.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience developing new academic programs, certificates, micro-credentials, or other innovative educational offerings.
  • Experience supervising faculty and staff in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with strategic enrollment management, student retention initiatives, and graduate program recruitment.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education and academic administration.
  • Experience with accreditation processes, program assessment, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Strong leadership, budget management, and personnel management skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and present data that demonstrates trends, outcomes, and progress toward institutional goals.
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a positive and supportive role model for faculty, staff, and students.

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides leadership, supervision, mentoring, and performance management for graduate program faculty and staff, as assigned.
  • Serves as the primary administrative lead for graduate program accreditation activities, assessment reporting, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Leads strategic planning efforts for graduate education and develops measurable goals and outcomes to support institutional priorities.
  • Serves as the primary advocate and representative for Graduate Programs within the institution and with external partners, organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Leads the development, administration, monitoring, and long-range planning of Graduate Program budgets and resources.
  • Prepares and presents annual program assessment reports, strategic planning updates, and operational metrics to institutional leadership.
  • Monitors and evaluates program quality, outcomes, and possible risk exposures. This includes training, evaluation, and revision of policies as appropriate.
  • Participates in developing and maintaining policies and procedures that are consistent with the overall Mission Statement of WVSOM and Programs and that comply with accreditation standards and other regulatory agencies.
  • Leads feasibility analyses, market assessments, and implementation planning for new graduate degrees, certificate programs, and micro-credentials.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, professional organizations, and community partners to support graduate program growth, student success, workforce needs, and new program development.
  • Leads faculty and staff recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, development, evaluation, and succession planning activities for Graduate Programs.
  • Works cooperatively with the Chair of the Graduate Programs in recruiting and selecting faculty.
  • Prepares accreditation documents for the Higher Learning Commission and maintains accreditation standards.
  • Develops and maintains an evaluation process for all graduate programs that includes feedback from students, faculty, and administrative staff.
  • Plans and designs curriculum based on accreditation standards and institutional priorities.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of didactic instructional activities for students enrolled in the programs.
  • Evaluates student didactic performance based on established educational objectives.
  • Analyzes and improves processes aimed at supporting student retention and success.
  • Works collaboratively with the Admissions Office on student recruitment, including participation in professional organizations and development of bridge and pipeline programs.
  • Works with the Marketing and Communications Department to support marketing, recruitment, sustainability, and alumni engagement initiatives.
  • Works directly with academically at-risk students to ensure support and address identified needs.
  • Counsels and assists students as needed and is available for program guidance, career development, and letters of recommendation.
  • Serves on WVSOM committees and attends professional meetings related to Graduate Programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean to support the mission and goals of Graduate Programs and WVSOM. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
