What are the responsibilities and job description for the Foster Care Supervisor position at Wellspring Lutheran Services?
Description
Foster Care Supervisor
Bay · Saginaw · Midland Counties | Hybrid — Bay City | $53,000 / year
The Work
This role puts you at the center of one of the most meaningful intersections in child welfare: the space between where a child is and where they deserve to be. You’ll be supporting and leading a team of case managers that carry a caseload of children placed in foster homes across Bay, Saginaw and Midland counties — meeting each child face-to-face every month, learning their story, and making sure their care plan actually reflects their life.
You’re not just managing paperwork. Some positions are about managing tasks. This one is about changing the course of a child's life. As a Foster Care Supervisor in Bay City, you'll lead a team doing some of the most meaningful work in the Great Lakes Bay region — supporting case managers that directly support foster families who open their homes to children who need them most.
What You'll Do
You'll supervise a team of case managers across Bay, Saginaw and Midland counties, ensuring our foster care program operates with integrity, compassion and full compliance. Your days will move between coaching staff members, reviewing cases, coordinating referrals and occasionally providing direct client services. No two weeks look exactly alike.
- Supervise and mentor direct service staff, support staff and student interns
- Ensure unit compliance with contracts, licensing standards, accreditation and agency policy
- Conduct quarterly case reviews and approve required reports including incident reports
- Manage referrals, intake coordination, and workload assignment across the team
- Handle personnel processes: onboarding, evaluations, performance improvement, and training records
- Maintain accurate data entry in agency and contractor systems
- Participate in the on-call rotation to support team coverage
- Provide direct client service as needed based on contract and unit structure
What We Are Looking For
Beyond the degree and the years: we want someone who is genuinely reliable, deeply committed to compassionate and high-quality work, and capable of guiding a team through the fast pace and emotional weight of child welfare. Strong leadership, communication and organizational skills are essential — and so is the kind of character that earns trust.
- Bachelor’s degree in social work or a human services field and 4 years of child welfare experience (required)
- Master’s degree in social work or related human services field and 3 years of child welfare experience (preferred)
- Valid Michigan driver's license, registration, and auto insurance (required)
- Someone who is dependable, compassionate, and doesn't shy away from hard conversations
Your workdays will mainly be on-site at the Wellspring Bay City office but could take you across the Great Lakes Bay region — into homes, schools, courtrooms and community agencies.
