This position serves as the chief accounting officer and is responsible for maintaining the official financial records of the assigned Component District and preparing budget reports. Ideal candidates will have a focus on best business practices including: accuracy, efficiency, and segregation of duties; consistency and backup of core business functions.
---Position Summary
The Treasurer is responsible for the receipt, custody, and disbursement of all BOCES funds, ensuring compliance with New York State regulations and Board of Education policies. This role oversees financial transactions with accuracy and integrity, provides timely reports to leadership, and supports the fiscal health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and safeguard all BOCES funds, including state aid, grants, and district contributions.
- Maintain accurate records of all receipts, disbursements, and account balances.
- Prepare and issue checks, electronic payments, and other disbursements as authorized by the Board.
- Reconcile bank statements and ensure accounts are balanced monthly.
- Work closely with the Business Office staff to maintain compliance with state and federal financial regulations.
- Provide detailed financial reports to the Board of Education and District Superintendent.
- Assist in annual audits and provide documentation as required.
- Monitor cash flow and recommend strategies to maintain fiscal stability.
- Uphold all required internal controls to protect public funds.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business administration, or other directly related field specifically structured to prepare individuals for work involving accounting (such degrees must include or be supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in accounting) and four years of accounting or auditing experience which must have been involved in the use of double entry books including the general ledger or other governmental agency books involving appropriation accounting and the preparation of budget and financial reports; or
- (1) Satisfactory completion of 60 semester credit hours in a regionally accredited or New York State registered two-year college including and/or supplemented by 18 semester credit hours in accounting and six years’ experience as defined in (1); or
- (2) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (1) and (2) above Job Qualifications
