  • Power: Are you well versed in High Voltage Power and its application in urban transit? Do you have expertise in working with substations, switchgear, circuit breakers, and other associated equipment? Do you have a desire to share your knowledge with other technicians? We¿re looking for a dynamic Automatic Train Control Instructor to train, mentor, and inspire the next generation of ATC technicians. In this role, you¿ll translate your technical expertise into hands on learning that directly impacts the safety, efficiency, and reliability of our rail system.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Associate's degree or vocational or technical school degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

Minimum Experience

  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in Signaling, Automatic Train Control, Communications, or Power related job roles, individually or collectively
  • Must include one (1) year of previous experience formally or informally delivering training, mentoring, or coaching to employees focused on skills development, on-the-job or classroom training.

Minimum Certification/Licensure

  • A valid driver's license and must maintain it while in this job.
  • RWP Level 2 certification must be acquired within 3 months of hire date and be maintained while
    in this job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and/or Adult Learning

Summary

The Systems Training Instructor is responsible for the development, implementation, and presentation of required training courses in one or more areas, including Signaling and Automatic Train Control Systems, Radio Communications, Field Communications, Power, and Automatic Fare Collection/Parking Lot Equipment. The incumbent provides classroom instructor-led training, initiates hands-on scenarios, and evaluates student progress throughout the classes and training program(s).

Essential Functions

Principal Job Duties

  • Develops, implements, and maintains training classes and programs for Power, Communications, Automatic Fare Collection craft employees and reviews training as necessary to ensure that training curriculum is current with WMATA procedures.
  • Conducts classroom and practical maintenance training for all technical and supervisory personnel to ensure students receive all information relating to their craft.
  • Evaluates student performance, ensures that employees have successfully completed the required training programs, and verifies employees are qualified to operate specific equipment relating to their assigned duties.
  • Consults with supervisory-level personnel, determining the effectiveness of employee training, ensures that prescribed maintenance procedures remain compliant with Authority and industry regulations, and makes appropriate recommendations for training program modifications.
  • Maintains current knowledge of modifications, changes, and redesign of Systems equipment and implements these changes into the training program in a timely manner, to ensure trainers are qualified and current on course material.
  • Uses a multi-facetted training approach that may include, but not limited to, lecture, demonstration, and computer-based materials, hands-on exercises, mock-ups, visual aids, and student testing. May be required to prepare and present oral/written reports.
  • Maintains training aids, charts, view graphs, presentations, equipment simulators, and mock-ups for classroom use. Coordinates specialized training locations, times, scheduling, and manages enrollment capacity.
  • Develops and proctors promotional tests and reference materials for Communications, Signaling, Automatic Fare Collection/Parking Lot Equipment, and Power personnel.
  • Supervises trainees¿ "on-the-job" performance including ensuring compliance with WMATA directives, Standard Operating Procedures, Safety and Operating Rules, Time accountability, and Complaint Resolution. May recommend trainees for commendations or disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Assists in other training programs where overlap or intersection occurs. Researches and prepares technical and administrative reports in support of training operations.

  • Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.
