Washington College is seeking a Writing Center Coordinator to join its academic support team.

The Writing Center Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Writing Center and maintaining existing services during the appointment period. Working collaboratively with Academic Resources and faculty partners, the Coordinator supports peer writing tutors, assists students throughout the writing process, oversees daily operations, and helps ensure continuity of Writing Center services while the College evaluates the long-term structure of writing support services.

The Coordinator supervises the peer writing tutors, coordinates tutoring services, maintains operational records and data, and plans programs that promote student engagement with the Writing Center. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Academic Success and collaborates regularly with other Academic Resource offices to support student success initiatives.

This is a full-time staff position. The position typically works mid-August through mid-June; limited summer work may be required to support program operations and planning.

Applications accepted for one week from time of posting. This is a full time temporary 10 month position.

Essential Functions:

  1. Coordinate the daily operations of the Writing Center to ensure high-quality tutoring services for students.
  2. Participate in the hiring of peer writing tutors in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Academic Success and other Academic Resource staff, as needed.
  3. Conduct regular meetings with peer writing tutors to communicate expectations, provide ongoing support, and coordinate Writing Center activities.
  4. Maintain tutor schedules, appointment coverage, and operational workflows.
  5. Provide one-to-one and small-group writing support to students at all stages of the writing process, as needed.
  6. Maintain Writing Center records and data, including student usage and tutoring activity, and provide routine reports as requested.
  7. Coordinate communication with faculty regarding Writing Center services, student referrals, and classroom support opportunities (traveling tutors).
  8. Plan and implement outreach activities and programs that promote student engagement with the Writing Center and other Academic Resources, such as National Day on Writing, Tutor Appreciation Week, workshops, and other campus initiatives.
  9. Develop and maintain promotional materials and resources that increase awareness and utilization of Writing Center services.
  10. Order and maintain instructional materials and office supplies necessary for Writing Center operations.
  11. Collaborate with Academic Resources staff to support student success initiatives and provide seamless referrals among campus support services.
  12. Maintain established Writing Center procedures, tutor training materials, and operational practices to ensure continuity of services.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned in support of Academic Success and the Writing Center.

Qualifications :

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Rhetoric and Composition, Education, Communications, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working in a writing center, tutoring center, learning center, or other academic support environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a student-centered environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office technology and willingness to learn institutional software used for tutoring scheduling and data management.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing, Education, Higher Education, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or training student employees or peer educators.
  • Experience planning educational programs, workshops, or campus events.
  • Familiarity with writing center pedagogy and best practices.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Salary: $40k - $48k
