The Washington College Department of Sociology invites applicants with a background in Medical Sociology or another health-related Sociology specialization, such as Public Health, Sociology of the Body, Sociology of Mental Health, or Gerontology, for a two-year, full-time, visiting assistant professor position beginning in August 2026. This position may be renewed after the initial two-year term.

The Department of Sociology at Washington College offers a major and minor in Sociology and oversees three interdisciplinary minors: Justice, Law & Society; Public Health; and Social Welfare. The department’s courses also support interdisciplinary programs across the college, including Gender Studies, Black Studies, Education and Human Development, Environmental Studies, and Communication & Media Studies. Candidates for this position will contribute to the core courses of the major as well as our interdisciplinary minor in Public Health. The teaching load for this position is six courses per year (three per semester) and will include Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, Introduction to Public Health, and Global Health Disparities. It is expected that at least three of the six classes will be sections of Introduction to Sociology.

Essential Functions:

• Teach six undergraduate courses annually (three per semester).

• Mentor student research.

• Contribute to the department and college life by participating in events.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Sociology with a background in Medical Sociology or a related field such as Public Health, Sociology of the Body, Sociology of Mental Health, or Gerontology. Candidates who are nearing the completion of their Ph.D. will also be considered.

• Ability to teach Introduction to Sociology, Research Methods, Introduction to Public Health, and Global Health Disparities.

• Demonstration of excellence in teaching and teaching effectiveness with a commitment to student-centered pedagogy

• Ability to advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds

• Track record of active research within their field of expertise

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment, while interacting collaboratively as part of a team.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $67,000
