The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Washington College invites applications for a two-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position of Hispanic Studies, beginning in August 2026. This position may be renewed after the initial two-year term.

We are looking for faculty-scholars who can contribute to and complement the department’s curriculum and engage undergraduate students. Specifically, the candidate must be able to teach Spanish at all levels as well as classes pertaining to the candidate’s specialty and/or department needs. The teaching load for this position is six courses per year. The position is open with respect to research specialization; however, candidates should succinctly communicate their research agenda in their letter of interest.

The Department offers majors in Spanish, French, and German, and minors in Spanish, French, German, and Chinese. The department’s courses also support interdisciplinary programs across the college, including Latin American Studies, Gender Studies, and Black Studies. Essential Functions:

  • Teach six undergraduate courses annually (three per semester).
  • Deliver instruction using communicative-oriented approaches.
  • Mentor student research.
  • Contribute to the department and college life by participating in the department’s yearly events.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Spanish or a related field such as Hispanic Studies or Latin American Studies. ABDs will also be considered.
  • Possess native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Introductory and Intermediate Spanish, Introduction to Literature and Culture of Spain/Latin America, courses pertaining to the candidate’s research.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate students with a commitment to communicative student-centered pedagogy.
  • Ability to advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Track record of research within their field of expertise.

Salary: $64,000.00 - $67,000.00
