Job Summary

A paraprofessional will provide students with instructional and behavioral intervention services and supports. Duties may include engaging students in small group activities, one-to-one assistance, and monitoring of student progress in elementary, middle, and/or secondary schools.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain safe working environment  Work as a team member with teacher(s) and school staff to help students obtain optimal physical, emotional, and social well-being necessary for learning  Supervise students in the lunchroom, playground, classroom(s) and/or other identified locations  Provide direct assistance to students outside of the classroom in environments such as the outdoors and/or swimming pool/locker room during community based instruction  Assist teachers in their teaching duties and other general responsibilities such as organizing teaching manuals, providing instructional support in media centers, rendering reinforcement activities, etc.  Oversee independent/guided practices and follow up drills and prescribed activities to ascertain the application of concepts and skills as headed by the instructors  Examine and score test papers or class assignments and distributing the results  Assist in preparation of the class before the commencement of learning activities – modeling and implementing standardized social and classroom conduct; exhibiting visual displays and demonstrations; documenting and retrieving system data; photo copying/replicating teaching manuals; assisting in cleanup and food routines; etc.  Assume responsibility for managing student behavior by using non-violent crisis management methodologies and stratagems, such as the Handle with Care, to intervene so behaviors which lead to conflicts are supported and ensure safety of the students/staff  Perform clerical tasks such as maintaining filing student information, copying, answering the telephone, cleaning up materials after a lesson, etc.  Ensure proper care and upkeep of educational materials, equipment, assistive technology, and supplies  Assist in identifying students having evidence of abuse and/or neglect and report as required by district policy and state law  Provide services on district transportation such as (a) riding to other schools in the district or educational settings within a three (3) hour driving distance of the district; (b) boarding district transportation at the child’s designated morning pick up location (e.g., residence) and riding to school then home with the child per the school calendar and/or the established hours of attendance; and/or (c) boarding district transportation at the school then riding to the child’s designated pick up/drop off location  Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and in the community  Participate in continuing education activities  Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Special Education Supervisor, Director of Pupil Services or designee appointed by the Superintendent

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED required  Must have a valid Pennsylvania State driver’s license and access to personal transportation  Experience providing services and supports to children in a school or an equivalent combination of experiences preferred  First aid and CPR training may be required during employment when the assignment is specific to implementing Personal Care Services (PCA) per a child’s IEP, Chapter 14/Section 504 and/or Individualized Health Plan (IHP). First aid and CPR is recommended for all special education paraprofessionals  Per PDE requirements additional training must be completed annually  Experience and skills in instructional role, use of technology, and interpersonal communications  Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas: child/adolescent development and behavior; organization and planning; behavior management techniques; and implementing oral and written directions  Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with families, students, and staff  Ability to perform duties in accordance with district procedures and local, state, and federal laws

Pay: From $17.10 per hour
