What You'll Be Doing

The EMS Training Instructor is primarily responsible for the delivery of instructional content to support the overall educational mission of the Wake County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. The EMS Training Instructor will provide support for training, continuing education and re-credentialing for all providers within the Wake County EMS System. This support of training and education will include direct delivery of education through traditional and non-traditional methods, evaluating program effectiveness, maintaining accurate records, analyzing data and research, and assisting the EMS Supervisors-Training (i.e. Training Chiefs).

The EMS Training Instructor should be fully capable of effectively delivering a variety of content to a diverse population of students ranging in age, experience, background, and learning styles. The EMS Training Instructor will need to have strong interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and self-initiative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and practice our mission statement of Prompt, Compassionate and Clinically Excellent Care
  • Deliver instruction and train employees, students, faculty and partners by providing information, including appropriate procedures, practices and/or the operation of equipment
  • Evaluate system needs through review of education requirements, student feedback and clinical research
  • Administer education programs and activities to include managing resources, time and students
  • Grade student work
  • Counsel students regarding progresses and mentor students
  • Use formative and summative assessment techniques to improve learning
  • Evaluate student performance through direct observation and review of performance reports
  • Enforce policies, protocols and standards
  • Effectively and respectfully communicate to individuals and groups in both written and verbal form as it relates to education, training and re-credentialing
  • Develop and strengthen relationships through communication with external and internal partners and customers regarding education and training
  • Effectively utilize software and hardware for instructional purposes to include biomedical equipment, simulation tools and audio-visual equipment


Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in community outreach and public events
  • Participate in various department specific committees
  • Staff the Emergency Operations Center or support departmental and county response to unusual events

Wake County EMS is a cutting-edge emergency medical services system that is responsible for providing EMS services throughout Wake County including within each of the county’s 12 local municipalities. We have well-developed mobile integrated health (community paramedicine) and research programs. We responded to over 140,000 requests for 911 EMS services in 2025. Required

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Associate's degree
  • No specific experience required
  • Certification as a North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic
  • NC Office of EMS (NCOEMS) Level 1 Instructor credential or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
  • EMS Instructor Methodology or National Association of EMS Educators Level 1 course or be able to obtain within six months
  • Valid Driver’s License and “safe” driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • NCOEMS Level 1 Instructor credential
  • One year of experience instructing emergency medical services

Work Schedule: Mon - Fri with availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Hiring Range: 35.86 - 46.61

Market Range: 35.86 - 57.37

Emergency Service Worker Statement
