Mechanical Engineer
Wahsega Labs | Alpharetta, GA
Department:
Engineering
Location:
Alpharetta, GA (On-Site)
FLSA Status:
Exempt
Level:
Individual Contributor
Position Summary
Wahsega created and expanded the Carina Platform: A daily-use and emergency communications platform for K-12 school districts. This includes smart IP speakers, intercoms, and emergency notification platforms. Our products are built in the USA, and our engineering team works closely with the factory floor to make that happen.
We’re a lean, fast-moving team, and this role reflects that. As our Mechanical Engineer, you’ll own the mechanical design function - new product development, sustaining engineering, prototyping, and production support. If you thrive in environments where you can see your work go from CAD to the manufacturing floor in a matter of weeks, and where building the process is as important as executing it, this role is a strong fit.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership position best suited for someone who is comfortable operating with ambiguity, building structure where it doesn’t yet exist, and collaborating closely with a small cross-functional team.
Core Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
- Own mechanical engineering deliverables across active product programs, including new product development and sustaining engineering
- Design mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures
- Develop prototypes and iterate designs based on testing and cross-functional feedback
- Create and maintain engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation
- Perform mechanical analysis including tolerance stack-ups, material selection, and thermal considerations
- Ensure designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Utilize in-house 3D printing, CNC machining, and other rapid prototyping capabilities
- Support capital equipment and facility improvement projects as needed
Testing & Validation
- Plan and execute validation testing to verify product performance and durability
- Analyze test results and recommend design improvements
- Troubleshoot mechanical failures and perform root cause analysis
- Support engineering verification and product qualification activities
Manufacturing & Production Support
- Work directly with the manufacturing team to identify and resolve design and production issues - including hands-on time on the floor
- Drive design for manufacturability (DFM) improvements across existing and new products including cost reductions and vertical integrations.
- Assist with tooling, fixture design, and assembly process improvements
- Own and maintain SOPs for products and manufacturing processes - including building them where they don’t yet exist
- Manage engineering change orders (ECOs) and product revisions
Process & Standards Development
- Assess and improve existing CAD libraries, drawing standards, and engineering documentation
- Build and formalize ECO workflows, design review processes, and quality checkpoints
- Contribute to a culture of engineering rigor in a fast-moving startup environment
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with electrical, firmware, and product/procurement teams throughout development cycles
- Support customer-facing or field technical investigations when required
- Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen)
- Provide technical input during product planning and roadmap discussions
- Communicate effectively across all levels - with peers, production staff, and senior leadership
- Manage third-party design and engineering vendors to maintain project momentum and meet critical milestones
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- 3 years of mechanical engineering experience, ideally including at least one role in a small or scaling hardware company
- Proficiency with CAD software
- Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping - 3D printing, CNC, or similar processes
- Demonstrated ability to support both new product development and sustaining/production engineering
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Effective communicator with the ability to work across engineering, production, and leadership
Preferred
- Experience designing hardware enclosures or electronic assemblies
- Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis
- Experience building or formalizing engineering processes (SOPs, ECOs, DFM standards)
- Familiarity with PLM or ERP systems
- Background in life-safety, medical, or industrial hardware products
Career Progression
Growth & Opportunity
Wahsega is growing, and this role grows with it. As an early member of a lean engineering team, you'll have direct visibility into the full product lifecycle and real influence over how the mechanical engineering function takes shape. For the right person, that means building the processes, standards, and eventually the team that the rest of the company scales on.
