RESIDENCY PROGRAM: ACGME-accredited 12-12-12 community-based Family Medicine residency in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)

REPORTS TO: Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Waco Family Medicine – Institute

DIRECT REPORTS: Associate Program Directors, Residency Program Coordinator, Core Faculty

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Family Medicine Residency Program Director (PD) provides leadership and accountability for a high-performing community-based residency program. The PD ensures clinical excellence, professionalism, resident well-being, and continuous improvement while maintaining full compliance with ACGME requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

ACCREDITATION, COMPLIANCE, AND PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION

  • Has responsibility and authority for residency administration and resident education at all participating sites
  • Maintains full ACGME accreditation and compliance with all institutional and Family Medicine program requirements
  • Leads ACGME annual program evaluation and self-study; implements and tracks corrective action plans
  • Oversees accurate and timely program documentation, reporting, and data submission (e.g., WebADS, Milestones, board pass tracking, case/procedure logs, duty hours, supervision)
  • Partners with the DIO/GMEC and clinical site leadership to ensure appropriate resources, supervision, patient safety, and a healthy learning environment (including CLER expectations)

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND CURRICULUM

  • Ensures high-quality didactic and clinical education across training sites; oversees site directors and faculty roles
  • Leads curriculum design and continuous improvement aligned with ACGME competencies and program mission
  • Ensures residents achieve competence in full-spectrum Family Medicine, including outpatient and inpatient care, pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, procedures, and continuity care
  • Provides strategic leadership for advanced maternity care training and maintains strong partnerships with obstetrics services and hospital leadership to support comprehensive training
  • Strengthens integrated behavioral health training, interdisciplinary team-based care, and community-oriented primary care approaches

RESIDENT RECRUITMENT, SELECTION, AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Leads recruitment strategy to attract and match an outstanding, diverse resident cohort aligned with the program mission, values and culture.
  • Chairs or delegates leadership of the Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) per policy and requirements
  • Oversees resident assessment, feedback, remediation, promotion, and disciplinary processes in a fair and transparent manner
  • Promotes resident well-being, professional identity formation, and a culture of respect, psychological safety, and professionalism
  • Mentors residents toward career goals, including broad-scope practice, leadership, scholarship, and faculty development pathways

FACULTY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURE

  • Recruits, retains, and develops core and affiliate faculty; oversees appointments, evaluation, and development
  • Leads faculty development in teaching, assessment, feedback, scholarship, and clinical quality; supports faculty advancement and recognition
  • Models and promotes the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct; addresses unprofessional behavior promptly and consistently
  • Collaborates with department and site leadership to ensure faculty clinical schedules and teaching responsibilities support resident education

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE, QUALITY, SAFETY, AND POPULATION HEALTH 

  • Maintains clinical competence and provides direct patient care as negotiated, role-modeling excellent, evidence-based care
  • Supervises resident patient care in both outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Integrates residents and faculty into quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, and health equity initiatives aligned with organizational strategy
  • Promotes appropriate supervision, graduated responsibility, and safe transitions of care across settings
  • Advances population health approaches within the FQHC, including panel management, chronic disease outcomes, preventive care, and community partnerships

SCHOLARSHIP, INNOVATION, AND EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Promotes scholarly activity among residents and faculty (QI, research, presentations, publications)
  • Builds and maintains relationships with hospital partners, academic institutions, and community stakeholders to strengthen training experiences and clinical integration
  • Represents the program and WFM Institute in regional and national organizations, enhancing program reputation and recruitment
  • Leads innovation in residency education, including curricular pilots, new rotations, and educational technology, consistent with requirements and patient safety

OPERATIONS, FINANCE, AND STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT

  • Collaborates on residency budgeting and financial performance to support sustainable graduate medical education within an FQHC
  • Partners with WFM leadership to advance strategic priorities, including health equity, clinical quality, patient experience, workforce development, facilities planning, and advancement
  • Ensures alignment with applicable funding and reporting expectations for community-based GME programs

  • Completes, or has completed, the National Institute for Program Director Development (NIPDD) fellowship (or commits to completion within an agreed timeframe)

​​​​​​​PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is primarily performed in clinical, administrative, and educational settings. Requirements include regular use of computers and phones; periods of standing, walking, and sitting; and occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds. Duties require access to personal transportation and the physical ability to travel out of state. Reasonable accommodations will be made consistent with applicable law.

 

Qualifications:

EDUCATION: 

  • MD or DO degree from accredited medical school
  • Satisfactory completion of an ACGME accredited family medicine residency training program 

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Current American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certification
  • Current, unrestricted Texas medical license (or Texas-eligible at the time of application)
  • Current, unrestricted DEA registration

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • At least three years of educational and/or administrative experience in an ACGME/American Osteopathic Association (AOA) accredited family medicine residency program
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity and training physicians to serve in medically underserved communities

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Prior Program Director or Associate/Assistant Program Director experience
  • Experience in an FQHC / community health center / teaching health center residency setting
  • Strong clinical experience across the full spectrum of Family Medicine; advanced maternity care/OB skills strongly preferred
  • Experience leading integrated behavioral health training or interprofessional education
