Impact
The Portfolio Manager is responsible for the strategic oversight, credit risk management, and performance of the bank's Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) loan portfolios. This role ensures strong asset quality, regulatory compliance, and portfolio profitability through proactive risk management, data-driven insights, and effective team leadership.
Responsibilities
The Portfolio Manager oversees and monitors the performance and risk profile of CRE and C&I loan portfolios, conducts credit analysis, covenant monitoring, and portfolio risk assessments, and leads, mentors, and supervises loan review specialists to ensure accuracy and timeliness of credit analyses. The role requires collaboration with relationship managers, loan officers, collection teams, legal, and regulatory partners, as well as contribution to strategic planning, product development, and client retention initiatives. The Portfolio Manager ensures regulatory compliance, alignment with bank policies and procedures, and prepares reports and analytics for senior management and regulatory bodies.

Skills
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
A Master's degree (MBA, MS in Finance, or similar) is preferred but not required.
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CFA, CPA, CRCM) can be a plus.
Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years' related experience in commercial banking, credit analysis, or portfolio management normally required.

Essential Functions
- Lead credit monitoring and proactive management of CRE and C&I portfolios.
- Conduct annual credit reviews, monitor covenant compliance, and update risk ratings.
- Analyze economic trends, industry conditions, and borrower/sector concentrations.
- Mentor and supervise loan review specialists, providing guidance and performance feedback.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with relationship managers, loan officers, collections, legal, and external vendors.
- Prepare comprehensive reports for senior management and regulators (e.g., OCC, FHLBNY).
- Track portfolio performance metrics using dashboards and automated tools (e.g., Ncino, SAGEWORKS/ABRIGO).
- Ensure loan files are complete and current, including DSCR, LTV, appraisals, and insurance documentation.
- Process amendments, waivers, and track covenant breaches using automated alerts within the bank's core system.
- Monitor early warning indicators, covenant compliance trends, and market analytics (cap rates, interest rates, sector performance).
- Identify distressed or deteriorating credits and recommend targeted mitigation strategies.
- Support monthly reporting, special projects, and portfolio initiatives under the direction of the SVP, Credit Administration.
- Conduct loan level and portfolio-wide stress testing as part of ongoing review process.
- Leads and delegates tasks in a clear and proper manner among assigned staff.
- Conducts annual performance reviews, providing clear feedback and follow-through with corrective action if necessary.
- Provides coaching, recognition, motivation and skill development for staff members on a consistent basis.
- Communicates clearly among her/his teams, assuring all team members have the appropriate tools and information to perform according to expectations.
- Administers personnel policies and procedures, such as time and attendance.
- Assures adherence to Bank policies and procedures and federal and state regulatory requirements.
- Provides cross-functional support to other areas of the department and the Bank where service or assistance is needed.
- Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or re-designed depending upon individual circumstances.

- In-depth knowledge of commercial real estate and commercial & industrial lending, including underwriting, risk rating methodologies, covenant monitoring, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven leadership and team management abilities, including mentoring, coaching, and supervising credit or loan review staff.
- Proficiency with portfolio management and banking systems (e.g., Ncino, SAGEWORKS/ABRIGO) to support data-driven decision-making and reporting.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external partners.
