CNC Swiss Setup Machinist
Job Summary
The CNC Swiss Setup Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating and supporting production on CNC Swiss‑type lathes. This role focuses on complete machine setups, tooling, offsets, and first‑article approval to ensure high‑quality, efficient production of precision parts. The Setup Machinist works closely with programmers and quality personnel to maintain process stability and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Operation
Perform full setups on CNC Swiss‑type lathes
Load, verify, and prove out CNC programs (G‑code)
Install guide bushings, bar stock, collets, and bushings
Set and verify tooling, tool heights, offsets, and work coordinates
Configure and support bar feeders and part‑handling systems
Perform first‑article inspections and make required adjustments
Tooling & Process Control
Select, install, and adjust cutting tools and inserts
Optimize feeds, speeds, and tool life for Swiss machining applications
Monitor part quality and process stability during production
Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and setup‑related issues
Assist with continuous improvement and process documentation
Quality & Inspection
Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and customer specifications
Use precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, pin gauges, and bore gauges
Ensure parts meet tight tolerance and surface finish requirements
Document setup parameters, inspection results, and process changes
Safety & Maintenance
Follow all safety procedures and shop policies
Perform basic machine maintenance and daily inspections
Maintain a clean, organized work area (5S practices)
Required Qualifications
2 years of CNC Swiss‑type lathe setup experience
Strong understanding of Swiss machining principles and guide bushing operation
Ability to independently set up jobs from prints and setup sheets
Proficiency with G‑code and CNC controls
Solid knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, and Swiss tooling systems
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with live tooling, cross drilling, and milling operations
Experience running small‑diameter, tight‑tolerance parts
Familiarity with bar‑fed, lights‑out, or unattended machining
Knowledge of SPC and process capability requirements
Skills & Competencies
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Effective communication and teamwork
Willingness to learn
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
Manual dexterity and good hand‑eye coordination
Work Environment
Manufacturing shop environment
Exposure to machine noise, coolant, and metal chips
PPE required
