Controller – Vistar Eye Center

Vistar Eye Center is the premier eye‑care provider in southwestern Virginia, delivering advanced ophthalmic services across glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics, pediatrics, cataract and refractive surgery, retina, and more.
We are seeking a strategic and collaborative Controller to support the financial operations for Vistar Eye Center and two related entities (property management and surgery centers). Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will play a highly influential role in transforming our finance and accounting department, leveraging cutting-edge analytics and technology to provide meaningful reporting and actionable metrics. This position is NOT remote based; incumbent will be expected to reside within daily commuting distance from our administrative headquarters in Roanoke, VA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the primary finance and accounting partner to the Chief Financial Officer.
- Support long‑range financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and multi‑year financial models.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to develop performance dashboards and analytics across service lines, facilities, and providers.
- Provide financial insight and advisory support for organizational growth, acquisitions, and de novo initiatives.
Accounting, Reporting & Controls
- Oversee accounting operations, including month-end close and financial reporting.
- Ensure adherence to GAAP and maintenance of robust internal controls.
- Serve as a key liaison with external auditors, banking partners, CPA firms, and legal counsel.
- Collaborate with the CFO in preparing and presenting financial results to executive leadership and shareholders.
Revenue Cycle Management & Payer Strategy
- Support revenue cycle operations, including billing, collections, denials, and accounts receivable.
- Analyze payer contracts, reimbursement trends, and margin performance.
- Contribute to payer negotiations and value‑based care initiatives.
- Maintain strong knowledge of coding accuracy, charge capture, and compliance requirements.
- Develop proficiency with HRIS and enterprise practice management systems.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Stark, Anti‑Kickback, and other regulatory requirements.
- Oversee insurance, risk management, and contract administration.
- Provide the CFO with financial analysis to support executive and board decisions.
Leadership
- Supervise support staff and foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related discipline is required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or on active certification track is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience with physician practices, healthcare services, or MSOs is preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in healthcare revenue cycle, reimbursement, and physician compensation is a plus
- Excellent analytical, communication, relational, and leadership skills are essential.
