Essential Duties
Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of special education students in a classroom or learning environment; monitor and oversee student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects; assist assigned teacher with the implementation of individual education plans. E
Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; assure students understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions; confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs. Assist students with meeting individual education goals and objectives, report progress regarding student performance and behavior. E
Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; distribute, collect, prepare and process attendance, medication and various other forms and documents; record student attendance as assigned. E
Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, research-based interventions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts. E
Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; monitor and interact with students during outdoor, physical education and other recreational activities as directed. E
Grade students tests and assignments as assigned; maintain records and student files related to attendance, grades, progress, behavior and assigned activities; prepare mandated reports and documentation as required. E
Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, exhibits and bulletin boards; operate audio-visual equipment and educational training equipment; distribute and collect paper and supplies. E
Assist students with performing and developing independent living skills and self-help skills; assist students with the development of social, vocational and job searching skills as assigned. E
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain a learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manager; provide classroom support by setting up work areas and displays and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials. E
Provide Extensive Service Need students with hygiene care and implement special health and medical instructions per the students IEP, care plan or physician orders. Including, but not limited to: suctioning services, catheterizing services, specialized feeding services, blood sugar testing and specialized services related to other health conditions. E
Assist Extensive Service Need students with special and daily activities such as using restroom facilities or athletic activities, toileting and diapering. E
Assist students with personal difficulties by assisting to keep students and staff safe in aggressive situations. E
Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions. Monitors student’s daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. E
Operates a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, computer and assigned software. E
Communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, parents and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; answer telephone calls, take messages and provide general class and student information to parents and others as assigned. E
Provide routine first aid to injured students according to established procedures as needed; administer medications according to prescribed instructions as required; respond to medical emergencies and prepare related paperwork as appropriate.
Monitor inventory levels of classroom supplies; assist in ordering, receiving and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of supplies as assigned; order and arrange for food items as required. E
