Senior Accountant
Fred Smith Construction is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our finance team and play a key role in supporting accurate financial reporting and day-to-day accounting operations. This position reports directly to the CFO and is well-suited for a hands-on professional who takes ownership of their work, follows through, and looks for ways to improve how things are done.
This role goes beyond routine accounting. We are looking for someone who is naturally curious, thinks critically about the numbers, and is motivated to dig deeper to strengthen processes and uncover insights.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and review financial statements, supporting schedules, and account analyses to ensure accuracy and completeness
Perform detailed account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and drive timely resolution
Support month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, variance analysis, and balance sheet integrity
Contribute to job cost accounting efforts, including tracking and analyzing project costs and partnering with operations to ensure accuracy
Work closely with the CFO to analyze financial results, including deeper review of P&L activity and cost drivers
Assist with audit preparation and compliance-related activities
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen controls, and increase efficiency
Take initiative to work through large data sets and independently identify areas for further review or improvement

What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
5 years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or a project-based environment
Experience with job costing and understanding of project financials
Strong reconciliation skills and attention to detail
Proficiency in Excel and experience with Viewpoint Vista or similar ERP systems
Ability to manage time effectively across busy close cycles and quieter periods
Strong analytical mindset with a willingness to dig into the “why” behind the numbers
Professional communication skills and the ability to build working relationships across teams
Self-starter who takes initiative and ownership of outcomes
