Job Summary
The Dentist is responsible for providing high‑quality, comprehensive, and appropriate dental care to patients. This role includes supervising Dental Assistants and Dental Hygienists as assigned and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the dental program.
Essential Functions
The following duties are considered essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made in accordance with the ADA to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
- Provide routine and emergency dental services, including diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative procedures, crown and bridge work, removable prosthetics, uncomplicated endodontics, and oral surgery.
- Prescribe and interpret radiographs with appropriate documentation.
- Safely administer anesthetics and prescribe medications in accordance with state regulations.
- Refer patients for specialty care within CAHN or to external providers and ensure continuity of care through follow‑up.
- Supervise Dental Hygienists and support staff.
- Conduct follow‑up patient care and monitor treatment outcomes.
- Provide oral health education to patients and families.
- Assist in reviewing clinic productivity, chart audits, scheduling procedures, and establishing guidelines for care and treatment.
- Educate patients and staff on illness prevention and oral health maintenance.
- Participate in community dental programs and outreach initiatives.
- Assist with in‑service training and ongoing staff development.
- Foster positive patient relationships and deliver high‑quality customer service.
- Manage challenging patient interactions with professionalism and effective communication.
- Demonstrate strong clinical competency and maintain accurate, compliant charting.
- Use computer systems for data entry and information retrieval with proficiency.
- Monitor and ensure the effective use of dental equipment and supplies.
- Communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats.
- Support operational and administrative processes as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Schedule
- Monday-Tuesday 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. - Occasional extended hours

Education & Experience
- Graduate of an accredited dental school (D.D.S. or D.M.D.).
- Licensed to practice dentistry in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including full prescriptive authority.
- Required certifications, including DEA registration and CPR.
- Knowledge of JCAHO accreditation processes and applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to community health center dental services.
