The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) is responsible for preparing and dispensing medications while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy. This role requires strong leadership, regulatory knowledge, and hands-on retail pharmacy management experience. The PIC will lead pharmacy technicians, manage inventory, ensure compliance, and deliver exceptional patient care.
Essential Job Functions
- Review and execute provider prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and legality
- Dispense medications using correct dosage, formulation, and labeling
- Organize pharmacy operations to ensure efficiency and accuracy
- Maintain full control of medication inventory, including stocking, labeling, and expiration monitoring
- Maintain and update patient medication profiles and dispensing history
- Counsel patients by listening carefully to needs and providing medication guidance
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA and Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (FWA) requirements
- Ensure pharmacy and staff compliance with Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations
- Ensure compliance with local facility policies and procedures
- Supervise Pharmacy Technicians, including:
- Daily workflow direction
- Scheduling
- Performance feedback and evaluations
- Escalation of behavioral or performance concerns to Senior Management
- Utilize pharmacy patient management systems effectively
- Perform additional duties as required to support pharmacy operations
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
- Active, unrestricted Pharmacist License in the State of Illinois (Required at time of submission — no pending licenses)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong leadership, organizational, and management capabilities
- Minimum 3-5 years of retail pharmacy management experience
- Previous leadership experience strongly preferred
- Experience utilizing pharmacy patient management systems
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills
- Frequent use of hands to handle tools, medications, and equipment
- 3 years of experience as a Pharmacy Manager / Pharmacist in Charge
- Strong retail pharmacy background
- Proven ability to lead and manage pharmacy staff
- Detail-oriented with strong regulatory and compliance focus
