Asphalt Paving Project Manager (DOT Projects)

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Project Manager to oversee DOT asphalt paving projects across Western North Carolina. This position is responsible for the full project lifecycle — from pre-construction planning through final completion — ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with DOT standards. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of asphalt paving operations, North Carolina DOT (NCDOT) specifications, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage the planning, coordination, and execution of asphalt paving and roadway construction projects.
Ensure all projects are performed according to contract documents, NCDOT standards, and company quality expectations.
Develop project schedules, budgets, forecasts, and work plans; track and adjust as needed to maintain project goals.
Lead communication between field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, inspectors, and clients.
Oversee procurement of materials, subcontractor agreements, and vendor management.
Perform project risk assessments and implement proactive solutions to minimize impacts.
Maintain project documentation, including daily logs, pay applications, change orders, RFIs, submittals, and as-builts.
Monitor project costs, labor productivity, and material usage to ensure profitability.
Conduct regular site visits to verify project progress, safety compliance, and quality control.
Support company safety initiatives and ensure that all site operations adhere to OSHA and company safety policies.
Requirements:
Minimum 5 years of experience managing asphalt paving or heavy civil construction projects.
Strong knowledge of asphalt paving operations, roadway construction, and DOT compliance (NCDOT experience highly preferred).
Proven ability to manage multiple projects ranging from $1M to $10M .
Proficient with project management and scheduling software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera P6) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license; ability to travel regularly to project sites across western NC.
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent field experience).
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with NCDOT e-Construction, Specs, and Pay Item management.
OSHA 30 Certification.
Experience with public works, state, and municipal paving projects.
Knowledge of cost control and project financial reporting tools.
