Compensation: $20–25 per hour (depending on experience)

Organization Description
Vecinos is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) Free Clinic that provides bilingual integrated primary and mental health care, mobile clinic services, health education, and case management to uninsured, low-income adults in the far-western NC counties. We offer a positive, supportive, and team-oriented atmosphere. We work in a non-traditional environment with limited resources. Schedules and hours vary throughout the year.
Purpose
The Health Education Coordinator strengthens patient and community wellbeing by ensuring that health education is meaningful, culturally centered, and integrated into all outreach and clinical interactions.
This role supports patients and communities in building knowledge, confidence, and capacity to care for their health, while honoring lived experience as a core source of knowledge.
Health education in this role is understood as a continuous, relational process—not limited to workshops or materials, but present in every interaction with patients and communities.
The Coordinator works in collaboration with the Outreach Director and OCHW team to ensure that all educational efforts reflect Vecinos’ Outreach Philosophy, Ubuntu values, and WHO Health Promotion principles.
Responsibilities
Patient Engagement & Activation
- Facilitate patient understanding and engagement during screenings, home visits, and outreach activities.
- Support patients in building confidence to manage their health and navigate available resources.
- Contribute to patient activation goals while prioritizing trust, clarity, and meaningful engagement.
- Advocate for access to comprehensive healthcare and supportive services across rural communities.
Health Education Design & Facilitation
- Design and facilitate participatory, culturally centered health education strategies based on community needs.
- Lead workshops, small group sessions, and one-on-one education using trauma-informed and adult learning approaches.
- Integrate education into everyday outreach interactions, including screenings and follow-ups.
- Adapt education approaches based on feedback, observation, and lived experience.
Outreach & Clinical Integration
- Work alongside OCHW team members to embed health education into outreach and patient interactions.
- Collaborate with clinic staff to align education with patient care and services.
- Support consistency and quality of health education across outreach, mobile clinics, and community settings.
Materials Development & Resource Coordination
- Develop, adapt, and distribute culturally appropriate educational materials (print, verbal, and digital).
- Ensure materials are accessible across literacy levels and reflect language, culture, and community realities.
- Coordinate and maintain educational resources for outreach activities.
Documentation, Learning & Program Support
- Maintain organized documentation of educational activities and required reporting.
- Support tracking of program outputs (sessions, participation) and contribute to understanding engagement and learning.
- Share insights and observations from the field to support team learning and program improvement.
- Participate in outreach activities and provide flexible support based on team needs.
Required Qualifications
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, Social Work, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
- 2–3 years of experience in community health, outreach, or health education
- Experience facilitating group and/or one-on-one education
Communication Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, community members, and team members
Cultural Competency:
- Commitment to cultural humility and experience working with diverse, underserved populations
Bilingual Requirement:
- Fluency in Spanish and English is required
Driver’s License:
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Community Health Worker (CHW) certification
- Experience developing or adapting health education materials
- Familiarity with chronic disease prevention and management
- Experience with participatory or community-based education approaches
Working Conditions
Flexible Work Hours: Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and nontraditional hours as needed for outreach activities and community events.
Non-traditional Work Environments: Ability to work in diverse community settings across Western North Carolina, including homes, farms, and community spaces.
Local Travel Requirements: Frequent travel to community locations for outreach and education activities.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry outreach materials and remain active in community-based settings.
