This position requires working in both shop and field environments, including active construction sites and outdoor conditions. The Fleet Mechanic may be required to respond to occasional after-hours or emergency repair situations to support company operations and minimize equipment downtime.
Vehicle & Equipment Repair
Troubleshooting
- Gather information and identify the facts related to vehicle or equipment issues.
- Develop a diagnostic process using available tools, testing equipment, and technical resources.
- Determine required repair parts, materials, and estimated repair lead times.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, PTO systems, steering, suspension, and brake systems.
- Perform repairs in accordance with manufacturer and company standards.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment for additional maintenance or repair concerns during service.
- Conduct road tests and complete alignments, adjustments, or additional repairs as necessary.
- Notify the Fleet Manager and equipment operator when repairs are completed and equipment is ready for service.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and field service calls as needed.
- Maintain DOT compliance and safety standards for all fleet equipment.
- Assist Fleet Manager with parts needed for repairs.
- Assist Fleet Manager with coordinating maintenance schedules
- Perform routine maintenance services in the shop or at job sites as required.
- Document completed preventative maintenance services and note any additional repairs or corrective actions performed during servicing.
- Perform inspections and maintenance on Altec bucket trucks, aerial lifts, and utility equipment.
Tools and Equipment-*Self Owned Tools Preferred*
- Select, rent, or purchase the correct tools and equipment for each job function.
- Assist Fleet Manager with the purchase of tools & equipment as needed
- Inspect tools and equipment to ensure safe operation and reliability prior to use.
- Utilize tools in a safe, efficient, and ergonomic manner to maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
- Properly clean, maintain, and store tools and equipment to ensure readiness for future use.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company safety policies.
Inventory & Vendor Coordination
- Identify frequently used repair and maintenance parts for fleet operations.
- Maintain an organized inventory tracking system for stocked parts.
- Monitor parts usage and inventory levels to maintain adequate stock and minimize equipment downtime.
- 3 years of experience as a fleet, diesel, or heavy equipment mechanic preferred.
- Experience working on Altec bucket trucks, aerial lift equipment, or utility fleets strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air brakes, suspension systems, and diagnostic software.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and service manuals.
- Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- ASE, OSHA, Altec, or related certifications are preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in shop and outdoor conditions.
