Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Shift: 12-Hour shift (36 Guaranteed hours)
Position Summary:
The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides comprehensive respiratory care services in accordance with evidence-based policies, procedures, and standards established by the Medical Center. The therapist delivers care as ordered by licensed healthcare providers and demonstrates advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in respiratory therapy across pediatric, adolescent, and adult patient populations, with an emphasis on adult critical care.
This role involves administering respiratory treatments, medical gases, mechanical ventilation, airway management, and emergency interventions while collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure high-quality patient care and positive clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform respiratory therapy procedures within the scope of the Illinois Respiratory Therapy Practice Act and organizational policies.
- Deliver respiratory care services to patients in general medical units, intermediate care units, ICU, and emergency departments.
- Initiate, monitor, and manage mechanical ventilation, including advanced ventilation modes such as:
- High-frequency ventilation
- Inverse I:E ratio ventilation
- Lung ventilation management
- Other advanced respiratory support modalities
- Serve as primary airway manager and respond to emergency situations, including:
- Rapid Response activations
- Code Blue/Blue Alerts
- Administer respiratory medications and treatments including:
- Aerosolized medications
- Medical oxygen and air
- Specialty gases such as Heliox, Nitrogen, and Nitric Oxide
- Assess patient response and recommend modifications to therapy based on clinical findings.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with regulatory standards, Medicare requirements, and organizational policies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and care teams.
- Monitor respiratory supplies and equipment inventory and ensure proper functionality of equipment.
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment to deliver safe and effective respiratory care.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Current Respiratory Care Practitioner License in the State of Illinois.
- Candidates credentialed after July 1, 2002 must maintain current NBRC credentials.
- Graduate therapists must successfully complete both:
- NBRC TMC Exam
- Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE)
- Basic proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) documentation systems.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs regularly.
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 4 hours at a time).
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and manual dexterity required.
- Ability to push and maneuver respiratory equipment, beds, wheelchairs, and carts.
- Ability to lift, reposition, and assist patients as needed.
- Must possess adequate visual acuity including color vision.
- Ability to review and verify documentation with a high level of accuracy.
