STATUS: Full-Time, Hourly (40 hours/week)
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services
 

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center, a full-service, K–12 charter school located in Pacoima, California, is seeking a dedicated and collaborative Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) to support students with communication needs. Under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), the SLPA will assist in implementing speech-language services as part of students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to help ensure access to education and social development.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Under the supervision of a Speech and Language Pathologist, the SLPA will:

  • Provide direct speech and language therapy services to students.
  • Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising SLP.
  • Assist in preparing therapy materials and organizing instructional spaces.
  • Develop and implement educationally-based IEP communication goals using a variety of service delivery models to support the classroom curriculum.
  • Record and report student progress toward treatment goals and objectives.
  • Assist with screenings and assessments as directed, without interpreting data.
  • Assist SLP in conducting formal assessments, preparing materials, and performing clerical duties for a supervising SLP.
  • Maintain confidentiality and accurate documentation in accordance with federal, state, and school regulations.
  • Support classroom teachers and staff in understanding and reinforcing communication strategies.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and team discussions when appropriate.
  • Communicate with families of students on assigned caseload regarding progress toward IEP goals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervising SLP or Director of Student Support Services.

Communications

  • Communicate effectively, both orally & in writing, with students, parents, & other professionals routinely.
  • Respond to parent and colleague communications in a respectful and timely manner.
  • Complete and submit weekly lesson plans to supervisor and involved colleagues in a timely manner.
  • Complete and submit quarterly progress reports and/or narratives in a timely manner.
  • Participate professionally in scheduled meetings (grade level; faculty; Whole Child Assessments; Professional Development, etc.).

Professionalism and Teamwork

  • Model professional behaviors and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the broader community. 
  • Maintain reliable, consistent attendance and punctuality.
Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 70 hours of fieldwork or clinical experience under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Current registration or eligibility for registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant with the California Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology & Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, and school staff across a diverse, urban K–12 setting.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining accurate records.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • $30 - $34 per hour
  • 195 days per year

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Upon receiving an offer of employment: 

  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ) 
  • Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
  • Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
