POSITION SUMMARY

 

Under the general direction of the Principal or designee, the Special Education Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, specially designed instruction to students with disabilities across grade levels (K–12). The teacher fosters academic growth, independence, and social-emotional development while creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment tailored to individual student needs.

 

This role contributes to student success academically and socially by implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promoting access to the general education curriculum, and ensuring compliance with School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws, including special education regulations.

 

The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can:

  • Deliver specially designed instruction aligned to student IEP goals and Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Support students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs.
  • Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Promote student independence, self-advocacy, and social-emotional growth.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, state regulations, and division policies.
  • Support the division’s mission to serve every child, every day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide specially designed instruction to meet individual student needs in various instructional settings (inclusion, resource, or self-contained).
  • Adapt and modify curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies to ensure access to the general education curriculum.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and student success.
  • Assess student performance through formal and informal measures; use data to adjust instruction and IEP goals.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, eligibility documentation, and service logs.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and other required conferences with staff and families.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and support positive behavior strategies as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state special education laws, timelines, and procedural safeguards.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress, services, and supports.
  • Coordinate with related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, school psychologists) to support student needs.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and enhance instructional and compliance practices.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive classroom environment that meets the physical, emotional, and academic needs of students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with Special Education endorsement.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities across a range of needs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and instructional best practices.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development and diverse learning needs across K–12 populations.
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations (IDEA), IEP processes, and compliance requirements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Supervises students in various instructional settings, including general education classrooms, resource settings, and self-contained environments.
  • Provides direction and guidance to instructional assistants, paraprofessionals, volunteers, or student teachers as assigned.
  • Monitors student behavior and implements behavior plans to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Reliable transportation is necessary
  • Daily travel between schools, LCS buildings, and local areas may be required for professional development
  • Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg is required
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Work may involve collaborative support across academic programs, student services, and operational functions, and requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, light lifting (up to 10 pounds), vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level, and visual acuity for preparing, reviewing, and analyzing written or electronic data.  Under ADA compliance, reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
