What are the responsibilities and job description for the UPH FINISH REPAIR position at Vanguard Furniture Co Inc?
Position Summary: Repair finishes to specified color and/or finish utilizing knowledge of wood properties and finish.
Position Responsibilities:
- Brush, spray, or hand-rub finishing ingredients, such as paint, oil, stain, or wax, onto and into wood grain; then apply lacquer or other sealers Lift frame onto finishing table
- Disassemble items to prepare them for finishing, using hand tools
- Examine furniture to determine the extent of damage and to decide on the best method for repair or restoration
- Fill and smooth cracks or depressions, remove marks and imperfections, and repair broken parts, using plastic or wood putty, glue, nails, and/or screws
- Inspects frames for runs and/or other imperfections.
- Perform all duties safely and report any safety hazards to your immediate supervisor; including techniques for grounding / bonding where needed
- Complete other assigned duties as directed by supervisor.
- Maintains neat and orderly work station; keeps equipment clean.
- Wear required safety glasses and work shoes; works safely and reports unsafe conditions to Dept. Supervisor. Also performs required stretching exercises.
- Performs other duties as required by supervisor.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Experience with finishes for all types of wood and veneers
- Capable to mix ingredients to obtain specified color/shade to specifications or match existing finishes
- Ability to achieve color consistency and color matches on a regular basis
- Calculates mix ratios as per manufacturer's specs
- Ability to apply primer, top coat paint, stain, and any wiped or spray-applied coatings to detailed parts as per customer specifications and industry quality standards
- Skilled in removing excess material and prepares the surface for finishing
- Must be familiar with and have operational knowledge of department tools
- Familiar with reading a ruler and have basic math skills
- English required for reading tickets and instructions.
- Must be able to setup materials in pots.
- Must be able to understand and follow a finish specification for use of correct materials.

Physical demands and work environment:
Lift / Carry: Frequently lifting 50 – 100 lbs. onto and off work station; occasionally lifting in excess of 100 lbs.; team lift greater weights. Must be able to lift/remove frame from work table.
- Standing / Walking: Must be able to stand and walk consistently during the 8 hour day.
Reach / Handle / Grasp/Feel: Repetitive use of hands required. Must be able to use spray gun entire shift.- Bend / Lift / Stoop: Gathering supplies throughout day from various heights.
- Push/Pull: Must be able to push frames into designated work zones; or pull with designated tow tool.
- Environment: Indoors, controlled airflow, depending on building may or may not be air conditioned.
- Climbing: Must be able to climb up/down ladders between 2 – 8 feet tall using 3 point contact method to reach various heights requiring sanding or finishing or to clean booth and change out filters.
- Tool Usage: Required to use glue gun, spray gun, rubber mallet, hammer, screw driver, channel locks, adjustable wrenches, and other sanding/finishing tools for entire shift. Use brass scraper to clean booths. Must use wash basin to clean tools.
- Automation: Provided scissor lift for positioning in some booths.
- Color Determination: Must distinguish colors and finishes for match, accuracy and quality.
- Near Acuity: Requires close vision of less than 3 feet, with or without corrective lenses, for precision.
