Job Duties
VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Preliminary Engineering Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Land Surveyor Supervisor vacancy. This position supervises the district survey unit. They conduct professional land surveying services (location, construction, right of way, utility and condemnation surveys) for a wide range of transportation projects in support of VDOT construction and maintenance programs. They ensure all survey work is compliant with VDOT policies and procedures and APELSCIDLA rules and regulations. They are responsible for signing and sealing survey work (responsible charge) under LS licensure. They secure data using a wide range of field survey equipment.
Required skills for job & position:
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices to include performance management and discipline
- Ability to implement appropriate project management practices to support budget compliance and project deadlines
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects with emphasis on project principles of scope, time, quality and budget
- Skill in providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to review consultant survey data provided to the department
- Knowledge of professional land surveying principles and practices, APELSCIDLA Board rules and regulations, and VDOT policies and procedures related to surveying
- Skill in the use of field surveying equipment, computers, CADD, GPS and the processing of survey data
- Ability to provide daily supervision to work crews following all applicable policies, procedures and processes in a field or office environment
- Ability to read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry and trigonometry
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid driver's license
- Land Surveyor's License
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects with emphasis on project principles of scope, time, quality and budget
- Skill in the use of field surveying equipment, computers, CADD, GPS and the processing of survey data
- Ability to read and interpret plans, deeds, plats, road and bridge standards, and property records
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Additional Considerations
- Ability to implement appropriate project management practices to support budget compliance and project deadlines
- A combination of training, experience, or education in civil engineering, land surveying or related field desired
- Ability to review consultant survey data provided to VDOT

This position is classified as “designated” to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
