What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Teaching and Learning position at Uxbridge Public Schools?
The Director of Teaching and Learning serves as the district's primary instructional leader, responsible for the design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of all teaching and learning programs across PreK–12. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Director provides strategic leadership in curriculum development, instructional practice, professional learning, and the use of data to drive student achievement. The Director partners with building principals, instructional coaches, and classroom educators to build a coherent, equitable, and high-quality educational experience aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the district's strategic priorities.
Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
Coordinates the work of administrators, curriculum and instruction leaders, and classroom teachers to align the Uxbridge Public Schools PreK–12 curriculum with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and current research on effective instructional practice.
Guides the ongoing implementation and fidelity monitoring of evidence-based, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) across all content areas and grade levels.
Leads the district’s assessment literacy efforts, including the design and use of common formative and summative assessments, to monitor student learning and inform instruction.
Coordinates with building administrators, curriculum and instruction leaders, and team leaders to review MCAS, ACCESS, universal screener, and other assessment data; assists with the development and coordination of plans to improve student achievement.
Oversees the district’s Science of Reading implementation, early literacy framework, and other evidence-based instructional priorities from PreK through grade 12.
Leads curriculum review cycles and instructional resource adoptions, including vetting of materials for alignment, quality, and equity.
Professional Learning & Educator Development
Appoints and chairs the Professional Development Committee; works collaboratively to identify, plan, and schedule professional development training for all district staff in alignment with DESE regulations, district goals, and school improvement priorities.
Designs and oversees a comprehensive, needs-based professional learning system aligned with the district’s Strategic Plan and the Massachusetts DESE educator evaluation framework.
Directs all components of the district’s Mentoring and Induction Program for new and early-career educators, including oversight of the Beginning Teacher Institute and mentoring assignments.
Partners with building principals to identify instructional coaching needs and ensure coaches are deployed effectively as a lever for classroom-level improvement.
Facilitates job-embedded professional learning communities (PLCs), collaborative inquiry, and data-team structures across all schools.
Supports educators in developing culturally responsive and inclusive instructional practices that address the diverse learning needs of all students, including English learners and students with disabilities.
Provides direct oversight and supervision of the district’s English Language Learner (ELL) program, ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements and the delivery of high-quality, equitable instruction for multilingual learners across all grade levels.
Provides direct oversight and supervision of the district’s mathematics and literacy instructional coaches, establishing clear goals, conducting regular observation and feedback cycles, and ensuring coaches are effectively supporting classroom teachers in improving instructional practice.
Ensures that all licensed instructional staff are appropriately and highly qualified for their assigned positions in collaboration with building principals and the Director of Human Resources.
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) & Student Achievement
Collaborates with the Director of Pupil Services, building principals, and instructional staff to implement and monitor a coherent district-wide MTSS framework ensuring all students receive appropriate Tier 1, 2, and 3 instructional supports.
Leads or co-leads coordination of universal screening processes, intervention programs, and data-based decision making to support student learning across all tiers.
Oversees the Title I program and all non-special education grant programs; ensures alignment with instructional priorities and full compliance with DESE and federal requirements.
Monitors achievement data and collaborates with principals to develop, implement, and evaluate school improvement plans and district-wide improvement strategies.
Strategic Planning & District Leadership
Serves as an integral member of the District Leadership Team, contributing to the development and execution of the district’s Strategic Plan.
Holds regular and ongoing meetings with school administrators, curriculum and instruction leaders, and team leaders to advance instructional coherence, share data, and coordinate improvement efforts across the district.
Assists in the development and coordination of district budget allocations relating to curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including instructional materials, professional development, and coaching resources.
Maintains liaison role and active participation with colleagues in state and regional associations and collaborative organizations, including DESE, educational collaboratives, and regional round tables.
Provides leadership for the responsible and pedagogically sound integration of instructional technology, including emerging tools such as artificial intelligence, into classroom practice.
Represents the district at DESE reviews, regional collaboratives, and state professional associations.
Compliance & Reporting
Ensures compliance with DESE regulations and requirements related to curriculum, instruction, educator preparation, and professional development.
Oversees the district’s Educator Evaluation system in coordination with building principals, ensuring fidelity to the Massachusetts DESE educator evaluation framework (603 CMR 35.00).
Maintains accurate records and reports related to curriculum adoption, professional development hours, Title I compliance, and grant program deliverables.
Monitors DESE program improvement requirements and corrective action plans related to instruction; coordinates timely and accurate responses to DESE district reviews.
Leadership & Communication
Builds strong collaborative relationships with principals, teachers, and instructional staff to create a culture of continuous learning and high expectations for all students.
Communicates instructional vision, program information, and data findings clearly and effectively to staff, School Committee, parents, and the broader community.
Participates in School Committee meetings and presents reports, data, and programmatic updates as requested by the Superintendent.
Models reflective, equity-focused, and research-driven professional practice.
Salary : $120,000 - $128,000
