At Utility, we’re reimagining what’s possible.

Our breakthrough H2Gen® technology transforms undesirable industrial by-products into clean energy and sustainable fuels and feedstocks, helping hard-to-abate industries decarbonize without compromise. We’re building systems and solutions that will power a zero-carbon future by turning what the world doesn’t want into clean energy it needs most.

But technology alone doesn’t change the world.

People do.

We’re building a team as bold as our mission. Engineers and scientists, designers and operators, storytellers and strategists all united by a shared belief: that the undesirable can become invaluable, and that industrial decarbonization can be both practical and economical.

At Utility, we see possibilities where others see limits. We believe progress happens when diverse minds collaborate toward a cleaner, smarter, more resilient world.

If you’re ready to do the most meaningful work of your career, join us and help build what’s next.

The Company

Utility Global is redefining how the world makes and uses energy. Through its breakthrough H₂Gen® technology, Utility transforms industrial off-gases and biogases into clean energy and sustainable fuels and feedstocks, helping industries decarbonize without compromise. The company’s proprietary technology delivers a scalable, economic pathway to a zero-carbon future, positioning Utility as a leader in the industrial decarbonization revolution.

The Role

Utility Global is seeking a hands-on Ceramic Engineer to join our Applied Technology Team in Englewood, Colorado. This role is focused on developing, optimizing, and scaling ceramic materials and processes for high-temperature reactor components.

The ideal candidate combines strong fundamentals in ceramic processing with a modern, data-driven approach to experimentation and process development. This person should be comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment where priorities evolve quickly, collaboration is highly cross-functional, and success depends on turning experimental results into actionable process improvements.

This is primarily a ceramic processing and manufacturing development role. Experience in electrochemical systems is welcome, but deep expertise in ceramic materials, processing, characterization, and scale-up is more important than electrochemistry domain knowledge for this position.

The exact title will depend on the selected candidates' experience and education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize ceramic materials, bodies, coatings, and processes for high-temperature reactor components.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve process performance, durability, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Translate bench-scale ceramic development into robust pilot-scale and manufacturing-relevant processes.
  • Optimize key process steps such as powder handling, mixing, dispersion, rheology, forming, drying, thermal treatment, and inspection.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to select and evaluate ceramic materials for current and next-generation applications.
  • Perform testing and analysis of ceramic materials and products using methods such as microscopy, rheology, thermal analysis, particle characterization, and related techniques.
  • Troubleshoot process and equipment issues affecting quality, yield, consistency, and throughput.
  • Support manufacturing activities internally and with external partners, including process transfer, issue resolution, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and maintain clear documentation of experiments, process conditions, results, and recommendations.
  • Communicate technical findings effectively to colleagues, leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure all work is conducted safely and in compliance with internal procedures and relevant standards.

This role will focus primarily on forward-looking research and development, with a smaller portion of time (20-30%) dedicated to manufacturing support for both in-house and third-party production.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field with 2 years of relevant industrial experience in ceramic processing, OR MS/PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field with graduate research, internship, or industry experience directly focused on ceramic processing, manufacturing, or scale-up.
  • Hands-on experience developing ceramic materials, bodies, or coatings using one or more of the following processes: extrusion, slip casting, spray coating, isostatic pressing, tape casting, dip coating, gel casting.
  • Hands-on experience with at least three relevant characterization techniques such as dilatometry, rheometry, particle size analysis, SEM, XRD, BET, porosimetry, TGA/DSC, mechanical testing, fractography, or digital image analysis.
  • Experience using statistical methods (T-test, ANOVA, etc.) to guide experimentation and/or process improvement.
  • Comfortable using Python, JMP, Minitab, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.
  • Comfortable operating and troubleshooting ceramic processing and analytical equipment in a laboratory, pilot-scale, or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong documentation, organization, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional R&D environment with evolving priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience scaling ceramic processes from laboratory development to pilot-scale or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting technology transfer to internal manufacturing teams or third-party manufacturing partners.
  • Prior experience in aerospace, defense, structural ceramics, refractories, filtration, catalyst supports, thermal management, nuclear materials, or other advanced ceramic manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply DOE, regression, SPC, root-cause analysis, or process qualification methods with sound technical judgment, including understanding of underlying assumptions, limitations, and appropriate interpretation of results.
  • Familiarity with high-temperature reactor systems, harsh-environment oxide materials, or electrochemical devices.

What Will Help Someone Succeed In This Role

  • A hands-on approach to solving technical problems, with the ability to move between bench work, equipment, process data, and team discussion.
  • A practical, quantitative mindset grounded in data, not intuition alone.
  • Comfort working in an environment where processes are still being built, refined, and scaled.
  • The ability to collaborate well across R&D, manufacturing, and leadership functions without relying on rigid organizational silos.
