Pre-Operative Readiness
- Prepare the operating room environment, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available prior to patient arrival.
- Consult and update surgeon preference cards; report any irregularities to the circulating nurse.
- Verify that all instruments and equipment are in proper working condition.
- Monitor and validate that room humidity and temperature are within the appropriate range.
- Open sterile supplies using aseptic techniques and continuously validate the sterility of all products placed on the field.
- Set up the sterile field in a standardized manner to facilitate clear visualization during counts.
- Perform all surgical counts (needles, sponges, instruments) in accordance with department policy.
- Assist the surgeon and circulating nurse with patient positioning and draping.
- Anticipate surgeon needs through active observation, ensuring appropriate instrumentation is ready before it is requested.
- Maintain the “Time Out” protocol; do not pass a scalpel or instruments until the process is complete.
- Accurately handle, identify, and label specimens, ensuring clear differentiation between tissues (e.g., right vs. left).
- Manage medications/fluids on the sterile field by validating orders, visualizing labels (name, strength, expiration), and labeling all containers accordingly.
- Assist with efficient room turnover activities.
- Prepare instruments for CPD by removing gross materials and using appropriate disinfectant/enzymatic solutions.
- Identify, tag, and report malfunctioning equipment to CPD or Bio-med with a clear description of the issue.
- Maintain room stock (linens/supplies) and return unused items to their proper locations.
- Proficiency in sterile technique and surgical safety protocols.
- Ability to safely transfer patients, gurneys, IV poles, and wheelchairs.
- Capacity to remain composed and effective under stressful emotional and physical conditions.
- Flexibility to assist with administrative/clerical tasks as needed.
- Education: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician course is required.
- Certification: Operating Room Technician certification (CST) is highly desirable.
- Experience: Two (2) years of experience in an acute or long-term care surgical setting.
- Licensure: Current BLS certification is required.
- Call Requirement: Mandatory participation in the night and weekend on-call rotation.
- Environment: Potential exposure to contaminated instruments, wet/humid conditions, fumes, toxic chemicals, electrical shock, and radiation.
