What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bankruptcy Paralegal ( Hybrid ) position at US Federal Government?

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) of a federal government agency is looking for an experienced paralegal with Bankruptcy and Litigation experience for a two-year contract for the Washington, DC office. Will provide paralegal services to the Assistant General Counsels (AGCs), Attorneys and the Supervisory Paralegal in the OGC office. Excellent opportunity to gain experience in the federal government.


Work Environment: Hybrid - 3 days on site, 2 days remote

Location: Washington, DC SW

Hours: 8:00am - 4:30pm (30 minute lunch) Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. No expected overtime

Compensation: $32.00/hour plus $4.47/hour (Health and Welfare benefits) $36.47/hour plus holiday pay and 10 days of Vacation for the first year.

Duration: Contract is scheduled for 5 years, need someone who can make at least a two year commitment

Start Date: Immediately upon successful completion of background check


Qualifications: Must have at least 3 years of paralegal/legal assistant experience including 2 years of experience in bankruptcy and/or insolvency matters. Should have experience preparing a variety of documents and correspondence related to litigation and bankruptcies, including: liens, complaints, stipulations, motions, civil cover sheets, pro hac vices, appearances, privilege logs, judgements and basic pleadings.

Strong proficiency with MS Office, LEXIS, Westlaw needed as well.


Using specialized paralegal/legal assistant knowledge, the contractor will coordinate various matters for AGCs, Attorneys and the Supervisory Paralegal including the orderly processing of OGC’s work to the courts, other Federal agencies, members of the public, and other departments within the agency

The contractor shall provide paralegal/legal assistant support services that include, but are not limited to, the following:

-         Prepares a variety of documents and correspondence related to litigation and bankruptcies, including: liens, complaints, stipulations, motions, civil cover sheets, pro hac vices, appearances, privilege logs, letters, judgments, administrative records, and less complicated types of pleadings.

-         Prepares written replies to inquiries from the public, other Federal agencies, or private attorneys for information about matters related to litigation, bankruptcy, and liens where legal and program knowledge is required.

-         Responds to inquiries from opposing counsel which require an interpretation of ERISA, Section 4042 (e.g., the termination of abandoned pension plans).

-         Reviews documents for accuracy of citations and conformance with required format, e.g., pleadings to be filed in the Federal and State Courts at both the trial and appellate levels.

-         Prepares tables of authority and cite-checks pleadings in conformance to West, Shepard’s and BlueBook systems. 

-         Performs complex office automation tasks in connection with researching, monitoring and tracking court and internal deadlines utilizing several software packages, e.g. TeamConnect, LegalEdge (for Windows), CM/ECF System, NextGen, PACER, LEXIS, Westlaw and the Internet.

-         Conducts extensive and thorough legal research, analysis, and evaluation of a range of topics relating to litigation, bankruptcy, and/or liens.

-         Establishes and maintains databases, subject matter files, chronological files, correspondence files and records relating to cases and discovery documents.   

-         Arranging case related meetings and conference calls.
