Accredited by the CSWE, the Social Work Department is housed in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare in the College of Community Engagement and Professions. The Department confers BSW and MSW degrees, and with the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, jointly offers a PhD degree in Social Welfare. The doctoral program prepares students for leadership roles such as university faculty, program evaluators, and policy analysts. The MSW program, which offers both online and in-person curricular options, emphasizes generalist practice. In addition, students can complete accredited programming in substance abuse counseling and school social work along with interdisciplinary certificates in trauma-informed care, applied gerontology, and nonprofit management. MSW students can also earn coordinated degrees with various programs across campus.

Position Summary

The Department of Social Work seeks to fill one on-site instructional academic staff position. The person who fills this position will teach four courses per semester during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. The position is reserved for a professional social worker with expertise in substance use services. Once hired, the instructor will work with the Chair of the Department of Social Work along with the undergraduate and graduate Social Work Program Directors to determine which specific courses to teach per semester. The courses will reflect the instructor's expertise and will include face-to-face and online instructional formats.

The person in this position will work independently under the general supervision of the Chair of the Department of Social Work. The position will start fall semester of 2026.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited University program
  • Hold a credential that qualifies one for independent clinical work in substance use disorders: e.g. SAC, CSAC, ICS, or an equivalent
  • Licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Minimum four years in providing treatment to people with substance use disorders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching courses in higher education
  • Experience teaching in the online format
  • Experience developing professional training or university course content

Target Salary: Minimum hiring salary $60,000, actual salary to be determined based on qualifications related to the position.
