The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville is seeking to hire a Disability Services Coordinator.

The Disability & Accommodations Coordinator serves as the primary authority for disability-related accommodations within the School of Medicine Greenville (SOMG). This position ensures equitable access to academic, examination, and clinical learning environments in compliance with ADA, Section 504, LCME accreditation standards, and national testing entity requirements, including NBME and USMLE.

This role requires coordination across multiple academic departments, clinical education leadership, hospital system partners, compliance offices, and external agencies to ensure appropriate implementation of accommodations in both classroom and patient-care environments. The Disability Services Coordinator plays a critical role in protecting institutional compliance, minimizing risk, and supporting student progression within a complex medical education and healthcare setting.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 2 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials
  • LPC, LCSW, LRC, or CRC

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Special Education, or Counseling.
  • Prior experience with student accommodations, disability services, or academic support.
  • 3 years in a medical school or health sciences setting. Experience with Banner and case management platforms.
  • Assistive Technology knowledge. (Accommodate, AIM, etc.)

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of ADA, Section 504, and disability compliance requirements in higher education.
  • Working knowledge of NBME and USMLE accommodation policies and national licensing examination procedures.
  • Understanding of medical education technical standards and clinical competency expectations.
  • Ability to balance accessibility considerations with patient safety and accreditation requirements.
  • Strong organizational and documentation management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Capacity to manage multiple concurrent processes in a high-stakes educational and healthcare environment.

Academic, Clinical & Licensing Examination Accommodations
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for disability accommodations across didactic, simulation, laboratory, and clinical learning environments (M1–M4).
  • Coordinate implementation of approved accommodations in classroom settings, standardized patient encounters, simulation labs, clinical skills assessments, and hospital-based clerkships.
  • Collaborate with Pre-clinical & Clinical Education leadership, Course Directors, hospital administration, and clinical site supervisors to ensure accommodations are appropriately implemented within patient-care environments.
  • Work closely with hospital system offices (e.g., Compliance, Occupational Health, Clinical Operations, Risk Management) when accommodations intersect with patient safety standards and essential technical requirements.
  • Facilitate accommodations for internal SOMG examinations and collaborate with testing services to ensure secure and compliant implementation.
  • Advise and assist students with the USMLE Step accommodation application process, including:
    • Providing guidance on NBME/USMLE documentation requirements and eligibility criteria
    • Reviewing required documentation components for completeness and institutional verification
    • Coordinating institutional letters or verification statements as required
    • Supporting students in understanding application timelines, submission procedures, and appeals processes
    • Maintaining appropriate documentation and communication related to national testing entities
  • Coordinate assistive technology, note-taking services, adaptive equipment, extended time testing, reduced distraction environments, and interpreting/captioning services in collaboration with external vendors.
  • Ensure accommodations align with SOMG technical standards, accreditation requirements, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and data integrity in accordance with FERPA and institutional policy.

  • Serve as liaison among the School of Medicine, affiliated hospital system, Academic Affairs, Registrar, Student Health, Compliance, and external testing agencies to ensure coordinated and compliant accommodation processes.
  • Provide consultation to faculty, clerkship directors, and clinical preceptors regarding accommodation implementation in patient-care settings.
  • Evaluate accommodation requests within the context of essential technical standards and clinical competency expectations.
  • Interpret disability regulations and national testing policies and advise leadership on institutional implications and risk considerations.
  • Participate in policy development related to accessibility, progression, examination integrity, and clinical training requirements.
  • Support accreditation preparation and documentation related to LCME standards addressing student support services and accessibility.
