Position Overview:
The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester is a premier national resource focused on advancing research and education in laser-driven fusion and high-energy density physics. As part of this mission, the LLE Electronics and Controls Engineering group is seeking an experienced High-Speed Analog Electronics Design Engineer to contribute to the design, testing, and support of custom high-speed electrical systems used in cutting-edge laser experiments.
In this role, you will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, designing high-performance analog circuits, presenting technical reviews, and ensuring the successful deployment of custom equipment used in high-power laser systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on pioneering technology at the forefront of laser fusion and high-energy physics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, assemble, document, test, and troubleshoot high-speed analog circuits and systems for experimental laser systems.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers from various disciplines to develop equipment requirements, provide project updates, and ensure technical solutions meet project goals.
- Conduct hands-on work with laboratory electrical measurement techniques, including the use of high-bandwidth oscilloscopes and RF/microwave test equipment.
- Use CAD tools for schematic capture and PCB design, ensuring proper circuit functionality and reliability.
- Perform circuit simulations using SPICE or equivalent tools to validate designs.
- Apply knowledge of lumped and distributed circuit analysis to optimize design performance.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to deliver high-quality solutions on schedule.
- Write detailed technical documentation for designs, assembly instructions, and system specifications.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering with at least 3 years of experience, or MSEE with at least 6 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven expertise in designing, assembling, and testing high-speed analog electronics.
- Hands-on experience with high-bandwidth oscilloscopes, RF/microwave measurement tools, and advanced laboratory measurement techniques.
- Proficient in CAD schematic capture and component-level circuit design.
- Strong understanding of circuit simulation using tools such as SPICE.
- Solid knowledge of lumped and distributed circuit analysis.
- Experience working within project budgets and managing project timelines.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Strong technical documentation skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with high-speed PCB layout concepts, including grounding/shielding, microstrip transmission lines, and minimizing parasitic elements.
- Experience with nanosecond/picosecond timing and measurement techniques.
- Experience in a project management role, including budgeting and resource allocation.
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn new concepts, tools, and techniques to support the advancement of cutting-edge technology.
