The Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) or Graduate Nurse (GN) and a vital member of the care delivery team. This role sets the standard for quality care and carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for patient care. The Staff Nurse manages and provides care for a group of patients and their families through independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with all team members. This position fosters leadership, partnership, and collaboration while maintaining strong relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes.
RN's on the Coronary Care Unit work rotating 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm & 7pm-7am) including rotating weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities:
- Engage in clinical development and/or RN residency program for new hires.
- Seek opportunities to learn safe, accountable, and autonomous practice from experienced nurses.
- Accept and utilize feedback to improve practice and demonstrate enthusiasm for continuous learning.
- Identify patient and family education needs and provide basic education to support care.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural diversity and promote a safe workplace.
- Apply evidence-based practice principles and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Use the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to meet patient needs.
- Formulate care plans and daily goals tailored to individual patients.
- Build compassionate, healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrate accountability for professional development and contribute to a positive work environment.
- Participate in shared governance and team initiatives to improve patient care and workplace health.
- 1 year med- surg/ telemetry or ED experience
- BSN preferred.
- Basic Arrhythmia Class and Critical Care Class for ICU Unit
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Certifications Required
- ACLS
- Basic Critical Care Nursing Course
- Basic Cardiac Dsyrhythmia.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) (within 6 months of hire )
- Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
- Must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
