UPMC East is looking for a part-time Patient Care Technician-Senior, or regular PCT to support the Acute Care Department.
This schedule reflects 24 hours per week, which could be a mix of shifts. Shifts will start at 7a or 7p. Holidays/ weekends are required
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Assist with daily living activities, patient procedures, and therapies (physical, respiratory, cardiopulmonary).
- Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN.
- Perform core nursing assistant duties: ADLs, vital signs, I&O, blood glucose, weights, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry application, and HAC/PSI prevention.
- Carry out advanced clinical tasks as needed: phlebotomy, EKGs, simple dressings, catheter and IV removal, bladder scans, straight catheterization, and NG tube management.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Provide patient and family education under RN supervision.
- Maintain respectful, professional relationships and collaborate across departments.
Safety, Compliance & Documentation
- Adhere to all safety protocols, infection control, and hospital policies.
- Accurately document care and complete clerical tasks as needed.
- Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
Professional Development & Team Contribution
- Accept feedback constructively and seek opportunities for learning and improvement.
- Participate in self-assessments and quality initiatives.
- Support unit operations: respond to call lights, answer phones, pass trays, and transport patients.
- Demonstrate accountability, motivation, and commitment to patient care.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must also have either for the Sr title:
- 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR
- 1 year of experience (defined above) and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
- 1 year of experience (defined above) and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
For the regular PCT title: One must also have either a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, or b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion, c) or enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or d) completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
- Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
- Successful completion of patient care technician senior class.
- Successful completion of basic information system training.
- Microcomputer experience preferred.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
- Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.
- May, in the course of their duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- ACLS preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Act 34.
