Job Description

The University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL), a member of NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Certified Assistant Athletic Trainer.

This is a full-time, professional position within the UMSL Sports Medicine staff. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is responsible for providing comprehensive athletic training services to assigned teams while functioning as an integral member of a collaborative healthcare team. The position operates under the supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer/Athletics Health Care Administrator and Team Physician, while also exercising independent clinical judgment in the daily care of student-athletes.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer plays a key supporting role in the delivery of healthcare services, contributing to departmental operations, mentoring students, and helping to maintain a safe and compliant athletics environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Coverage

  • Provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for assigned NCAA Division II teams
  • Deliver independent, day-to-day clinical decision-making regarding injury care and return-to-play status within established medical protocols
  • Provide on-site medical coverage for practices, competitions, and team travel
  • Implement emergency action plans and manage acute injuries

Assistant Role Within Sports Medicine Team

  • Support the Head Athletic Trainer in the overall operation of the sports medicine program
  • Collaborate with other athletic trainers to ensure coverage for all varsity sports
  • Assist with scheduling coverage, coordinating care, and maintaining continuity across teams
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for assigned sports in coordination with supervising staff
  • Contribute to policy implementation, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives

Administration & Operations

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential medical records using electronic medical record systems
  • Assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and facility oversight
  • Support administrative tasks such as insurance coordination and documentation review
  • Participate in departmental meetings and professional development activities

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with coaches, physicians, strength and conditioning staff, and student-athletes
  • Educate student-athletes on injury prevention, nutrition, recovery, and overall wellness
  • Foster a positive and professional working relationship within the athletics department

Student & Program Support

  • Assist in the supervision and mentorship of athletic training students and/or interns (if applicable)
  • Promote a student-centered environment aligned with NCAA Division II philosophy
  • Support departmental and campus initiatives related to student-athlete well-being

Compliance

  • Adhere to NCAA, GLVC, institutional, and sports medicine best practices
  • Maintain all required certifications and licensure
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) and institutional policies

Variable dependent on recruiting, practices and games.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Athletic Training (CAATE-accredited program)

BOC certification and eligibility for Missouri licensure (or current Missouri licensure required prior to start date)

CPR/AED certification

Previous experience as an Assistant Athletic Trainer or in a collegiate athletics setting

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Familiarity with NCAA Division II philosophy and compliance practices

Anticipated Hiring Range

52,915.20- 68,161.60
