Role Description The Environmental Reporter is a full-time, on-site role based in Baltimore, MD. This position is responsible for researching, reporting, and writing news and feature stories on environmental issues relevant to UMES, the surrounding region, and broader policy and scientific developments. The Environmental Reporter will conduct interviews with faculty, students, community members, and subject-matter experts; review scientific reports and policy documents; and translate complex environmental topics into accessible, accurate content for digital and print platforms. Daily tasks include pitching story ideas, meeting deadlines, collaborating with communications and academic departments, attending relevant events or field activities, and ensuring that coverage reflects diverse perspectives in environmental justice and sustainability. The role may also involve producing multimedia content, such as photos, audio clips, or short video segments, to enhance storytelling.
Qualifications
- Strong reporting and writing skills, including the ability to research complex topics, conduct thorough interviews, and craft clear, engaging environmental stories.
- Experience with journalism practices such as fact-checking, editing, and adherence to ethical and professional standards in news gathering.
- Familiarity with environmental science, climate change, sustainability, or related fields, with the ability to interpret scientific and policy documents for general audiences.
- Proficiency in digital publishing tools and basic multimedia skills (e.g., photography, audio or video recording, social media) to support online storytelling.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, environmental studies, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, non-discriminatory reporting that reflects diverse communities and perspectives.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, staff, and community partners, and to work on-site in Baltimore, MD as required.
