The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Linguistics is seeking part-time faculty for our Spring 2026 semester, beginning January 20, 2026 .

Courses include:

Beginning American Sign Language (ASL 101) – An extensive study of receptive and expressive use of ASL, as well as an introductory discussion of Deaf culture. Course content covers basic principles in the use of sign, sign vocabulary, and aspects of the grammar of ASL.

Signs of Language in the Brain (LIN 310) - This course looks at language as a capacity of the human brain. Models of language breakdown for spoken languages are reviewed, and the remainder of the course focuses upon signed language aphasia, the effects of Parkinson’s disease on articulation and motor planning, and how spatial and attentional deficits caused by right hemisphere damage affect the processing and production of signing.

We are seeking a student-focused instructors who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus for reference.

The Department of Linguistics is an undergraduate program within the College of Science, Technology and Health. Linguistics students can major in general linguistics or in a number of concentrations. We also offer several minors.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefits provided by the University of Maine System. In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.

Required Qualifications:

ASL 101:

  • Native to near-native signing ability, ASLPI 4-5, possession of ASLTA or willingness to work toward ASLTA certification.
  • B.A. or more advanced degree (except as supervised co-instructors).

LIN 310:

  • MA in Linguistics or related field
