Description

The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia is seeking a PT Case Manager to join our Student Development team. 

The Case Manager reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Director of Case Management.  The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Director of Case Management. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Type: RPT (1463h/year)  (Benefits Eligible) 

Schedule: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (6 hours/day with some evenings and weekends to meet needs of the department may be required

Job Purpose: The Case Manager will support and guide students in crisis and students of concern to appropriate referrals both on and off campus, leading our triage and intake process, in collaboration with the Wellbeing and Belonging team. 

 

Reporting to the Director of Case Management, the Case Manager will work to create, enhance, support, and facilitate initiatives designed to promote holistic student well-being by engaging students in opportunities to reflect on and advocate for their personal well-being; providing support services and resources for students struggling or in crisis; and ensuring the campus community is aware of the resources available to support students of concern.

 

Specific Job Duties:

  • Collaborates with the Student Development Leadership Team and Case Management team to implement non-clinical interventions to provide follow up care, support and resources for students who have challenges with academic, health, wellness, conduct, safety or their general welfare or may be at risk of being retained if they are otherwise not provided for.
  • Serves as an intake person for students in crisis, chronic or emerging situations that compromise the student’s ability to be successful in the many facets of university life.
  • Meets with students and colleagues to learn more about a student’s well-being, resources needs, and plans.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening and cultivating meaningful connections with diverse faculty, staff, student, parent, and community partners
  • Maintain a system for following up with students who have been referred to campus or community resources, including providing follow-up services to encourage compliance with recommendations.
  • Maintains detailed, private reports of interactions with students, including case notes, referrals provided, statistics and follow up, utilizing the Maxient software
  • Consults with and gathers information to support the well-being of students, including coordinating with appropriate stakeholders regarding interdisciplinary intervention and support efforts, including the Health Center, the Counseling Center, Spiritual Life, Wellness Education and Health Promotion, Campus Recreation, the Academic Achievement Center, Athletics, other Student Development units, faculty, staff, parents and other resources as needed 
  • Works to build and maintain relationships with off campus partners to support students and supplement services not available at the University.
  • Assists with follow up from incidents of interpersonal misconduct as needed, including those who have experienced or been accused of sexual misconduct.
  • Works collaboratively with various Student Development departments on creating and implementing skills-development, community-building and educational programming workshops and events.
  • Serves in an on-call capacity, as needed. 
  • Co-facilitates the Referral form, or similar critical well-being alert system, for the University and coordinate response to student concerns including all processes for receiving, triaging, responding to and assigning cases from forms, coordinating follow up efforts for referrals and referrers, and data analysis of form information
  • Participates in the University’s Campus Assessment Response and Education (CARE) Team  meetings and coordinates referrals and support services for students brought up in these meetings.
  • Participates in meetings related to specific students of concern, including participation in the Behavioral Intervention Team and Threat Assessment Team, as requested
  • Participates in the Office of Case Management staff meetings and one on one meetings with the Director of Case Management. 
  • Ability to recognize and set appropriate boundaries with students, including maintaining a focus on connecting students to resources and coaching
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively work in a fast paced environment, quickly adapt to changing student needs, and multitask while maintaining organization and thoughtful interactions with colleagues and students
  • Embodies the ability to maintain composure when faced with crisis and/or high-stress situations, and reserve personal reactions/judgments/opinions.
  • Serves on department and University committees as assigned.
  • Assumes any additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.

Experience/Skills: 

  • Specialized knowledge, skills and significant experience working directly with college students (including undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, non-traditional students) 
  • Ability to mulit-task and handle a large, active caseload
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and crisis management skills
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently and as part of a team

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally. Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to move about campus as needed to deliver items, attend meetings, etc.
  • Extensive wrist and hand movements as related to keyboarding
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stop and reach as needed for routine office duties
  • Ability to work late night and weekend hours

Qualifications


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or other related field; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or other related field AND 2 years of experience in Higher Education environment or Mental Health field with increasing responsibility in work assignments

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience in private higher education 
  • College/university experience in any or all of the following areas:  
    • Case management in the higher education environment

    • Counseling, social work, or other significant experience preferably with college students

    • Crisis response training or on-call experience

    • Motivational interviewing

    • Programming and event planning experience 

    • Residence Life and Housing experience

  • Familiarity with higher education legal or case law 
  • Google Suite Experience

Education: 

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or other related field; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or other related field AND 2 years of experience in Higher Education environment or Mental Health field with increasing responsibility in work assignments
