Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration from date of hire), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR), Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), located in Manoa, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
Conducts research to enhance methods for controlling tephritid fruit flies. Designs and leads laboratory and field experiments (e.g., related to insect traps). Collects and analyzes data. Collaborates with other laboratory members and other entomology, microbiology, and agricultural laboratory groups. Drives to worksite to collect samples. Writes scientific reports and presents results at meetings. May train others on fly colonies and research. May travel to other states independently to train members and assist with lab work approximately once per month.
Primary Qualifications
**EDUCATION**
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Entomology, Botany, Agriculture, or related field. (Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Entomology, Botany, Agriculture, or related field and an additional two (2) years of related experience may substitute for a Masters Degree.).
**EXPERIENCE**
One to three (1-3) years of experience in applied entomological research.
**KNOWLEDGE**
Knowledge of tephritid fruit fly ecology and management.
**ABILITIES and SKILLS**
Handling chemicals and conducting microscopy, biochemical assays, and molecular diagnostics. Strong critical thinking and organizational skills to design experiments. Ability to analyze different datasets. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employees initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within two (2) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
**PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS**
Ability to stay focused while sitting or standing for long periods of time.
