This position is responsible for performing a variety of routine or repetitive basic laboratory duties in support of laboratory research. Generally, involves tasks/techniques which requires on the job training and draws largely upon practical knowledge and experience.

The Grosmark lab in the Department of Neuroscience at the UConn School of Medicine seeks a Special Payroll - Research Technician to assist with research involving the dynamics of memory consolidation in mice. The individual will work with Dr. Grosmark to perform state-of-the art cellular-resolution, fiber-photometry, optogenetic and behavioral experiments in mice performing a VR spatial. Day-to-day responsibilities will also involve maintaining a mouse colony, assisting in overall laboratory maintenance, and processing purchases for the lab.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under close supervision; works under general supervision with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Receives training in designated research protocols which involves basic technical laboratory techniques and procedures and the operation of laboratory equipment such as but not limited to, cryostat, microscope, etc.

  • Assists research and laboratory personnel with experiments and procedures.

  • Performs computer related tasks.

  • Records and maintains accurate records utilizing computer database or manual methods and performs related clerical tasks, such as labeling, filing, inventories and requisition of supplies, tissue samples, etc.

  • Trains and coordinates the activities of student workers.

  • Performs equipment calibration and minor equipment maintenance such as but not limited to, pumps, compressors x-ray equipment, spectrophotometers, etc.

  • Serves as a resource to other learning specific techniques and/or process.

  • Organizes supplies, materials or equipment.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

  • Basic knowledge of research protocols, principles and procedures involving rodent surgical and behavioral methods.

  • Basic knowledge of scientific techniques such as immunohistochemistry, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and reagent/solution preparation etc.

  • Basic knowledge of operating small electronics (Raspberry Pi, printed circuit boards) the Linux-compatible game engine Godot.

  • Basic theoretical knowledge of neuroscience and physiology, supported by strong GPA in course materials.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to identify, produce, organize, analyze, evaluate and interpret data.

  • Ability to perform simple calculations and keep simple technical records.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

  • An associate's degree, or bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, psychology, biomedical engineering, or related STEM fields.

  • At least one (1) year of lab experience working with: murine models of spatial memory, advanced methods in optogenetics and stereotaxic surgeries.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May occasionally be required to lift standard laboratory equipment and supplies.

  • May be exposed to risk from such elements as toxic vapor.

SCHEDULE: This position is part-time, 15-30 hours per week. The schedule will be determined based on needs of laboratory. May include some weekends and minor holidays.

SALARY: The hourly rate for this position is $18.00. This position is not eligible for benefits.

The duration of this appointment will be approximately 12 months and may be less or continued based on need. Due to the special nature of this position, continuous employment cannot be guaranteed.
