At the UCHC this class is accountable for performing the basic laboratory and/or related support tasks for assigned research projects/programs or segments of programs/projects.

Department of Neuroscience in the School of Medicine seeks applications for a full-time Special Payroll Research Assistant. The successful candidate will work on a project focused on studying skeletal growth and development using mouse model systems.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the close supervision of an employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May lead paraprofessional clerical or other lower ranking employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assisting the PI and lab staff with genotyping, histology, molecular biology experiments, animal studies, data analysis, general lab management.

• Performs a limited range of related duties in conducting laboratory tests, provides support services for assigned research projects.

• Receives trainee assignments in designated research protocols, procedures, techniques and equipment.

• Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

• Prior laboratory experience and basic instrumentation skills.

• Experience in histological staining, microscopy, and molecular biology techniques (i.e.. Western blotting, quantitative gene expression analyses).

• Intermediate level proficiency in R or Python.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Maintains a high degree of organization, accuracy and attention to detail.

• Ability to analyze, evaluate and interpret data.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

General Experience:

Bachelor's degree in molecular, cellular, or developmental biology. Degrees in other areas may be substituted on a case-by-case basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbents in this class may be required to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases.

Working Conditions:

Incumbents in this class may be occasionally required to lift heavy objects such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes or glassware; may be exposed to such hazards as broken glass, toxic vapors radioactive materials, and toxic or disease carrying substances.

SCHEDULE : Full-time, 30-40 hours per week. Schedule will be based on department needs.

SALARY: The hourly rate is $22.00. This position is not eligible for benefits.

The duration of this appointment will be 9 to 10 months. Due to the special nature of this position, continuous employment cannot be guaranteed.

Salary : $22
