At UConn Health, the clinical veterinarian is responsible for managing daily operations related to veterinary care, animal use, pre-operative and post-operative services, regulatory compliance, education, training, and research. This position provides support for animal care and programs primarily at UConn Health located in Farmington, CT.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Receives general direction from the Director or an employee of a higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

Supervises technicians, specialists, and staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

Provides direct clinical and surgical veterinary care. Consults with and instructs investigators on the diagnosis and treatment of animals; prevention health programs; selection of animal models; selection and administration of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers; planning and conduct of animal surgical procedures analgesics, and tranquilizers; and planning and conduct of animal surgical procedures.

Keeps abreast of new veterinary developments, technology advances in the care and treatment of laboratory animals and provides training to staff and others who work with animals to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Manages preventative health programs that may include species-specific quarantine, sentinel programs, and annual health examinations.

Collaborates with administrators, faculty, animal care staff, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to evaluate facilities and practices and to recommend practical and effective animal care and use procedures and maintenance systems. Provides veterinary pre-review of IACUC protocols and may serve as a voting member of the IACUC.

Supports the Attending Veterinarian in ensuring compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, National Institute of Health (NIH) Guidelines, AAALAC International accreditation requirements, and other applicable policies, regulations, and guidelines.

Provides animal care support for UConn Health

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY:

Considerable knowledge of animal handling, compassion, and empathy

Considerable oral and written communication, time management, and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of the AAALAC accreditation process.

Knowledge of computer software applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Ability to stay calm under pressure and the capacity to tolerate unpleasant situations

Ability to use analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with an aptitude for detailed work.

Ability to work and collaborate with a diverse workforce.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

GENERAL EXPERIENCE :

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution or possession of an ECFVG certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT :

Must hold and maintain a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Connecticut at the time of hire.

Must possess or obtain within three (3) months of hire, a valid Connecticut Controlled Substance License, and maintain it throughout employment.

Board certification/eligibility in laboratory animal medicine; or 3-5 years of relevant private practice experience (e.g., exotic and small animal practice)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

USDA accredited veterinarian

Advanced training in laboratory animal medicine; veterinary anesthesiology, surgery or emergency medicine; or other relevant veterinary specialty.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to hazards from equipment and exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, toxic, and hazardous substances. Ability to lift objects weighing twenty-five

(25) pounds. Must be available to be on-call for weekends on a rotating basis, during emergencies, and occasional holiday work as required for effective campus operations.

May be required to assist with veterinarian coverage at the UConn Storrs campus.

SCHEDULE: Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 60-minute unpaid meal break.
