Executive Director, IT Services

Classification: Level 5/ Class 6220/ Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited / Non-represented

Hiring Salary: $140,000 - $150,000

Location: San Francisco, California (On-site role)

The Role And Responsibilities

The Executive Director, IT Services is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Assistant Dean of IT & CIO. This role serves as the operational and managerial backbone of the IT Division, translating the CIO's strategic vision into coordinated execution across all IT service domains. The Executive Director provides direct supervision of IT service area leaders and serves as the senior operational leader within the division. This role leads the day-to-day operations of the IT division and implements strategic priorities set by the CIO.

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to:

Division Leadership & Service Operations

  • Directly supervise IT service area leaders; foster a culture of accountability and professional growth through performance management, goal-setting, and ongoing development across all reporting functions.
  • In partnership with the CIO, build a service-oriented team culture grounded in transparency and continuous improvement; serving as the primary escalation point for operational issues, personnel matters, and inter-team coordination.
  • Oversee implementation of the IT Division’s operational framework under the direction of the CIO: service level agreements, ticketing practices, escalation procedures, and end-user satisfaction standards.
  • Oversee the full project lifecycle, from scope and resource planning through execution, quality assurance, and post-implementation review, and lead implementation of improvements through ongoing analysis of service metrics.
  • Support workforce planning, hiring, and onboarding in partnership with the CIO and Human Resources.
  • Cultivate trusted relationships with faculty, staff, and administrative leaders across the College; serve as a primary point of contact for understanding evolving technology needs and translating them into actionable IT priorities.

Enterprise Systems & Educational Technology

  • Manage and support the College’s enterprise systems in alignment with CIO strategy, including ERP/SIS, supporting systems, integrations, and the full educational technology stack, including LMS, lecture capture, and classroom technology.
  • Ensure operational continuity, system reliability, and sound change management across all platforms; champion data governance, system integrity, and access management.
  • Partner with the CIO on enterprise systems strategy, including modernization planning, vendor negotiations, and multi-year investment roadmaps, and with academic leadership to align technology investments with curriculum priorities.

Infrastructure, Security & Facilities Technology

  • Partner with network, systems, and security functions to ensure reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure; champion compliance with applicable security frameworks, data protection requirements, and UC policies.
  • Support business continuity planning, disaster recovery preparedness, and incident response coordination.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Assist the CIO in developing and managing the IT Division's operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures, forecast resource needs, and provide accurate reporting on technology investments.
  • Provide analysis and recommendations build-vs-buy and insource-vs-outsource decisions with a focus on long-term value and institutional capacity.
  • Manage vendor relationships and support CIO-led negotiations and third-party service coordination, ensuring contractual compliance and performance accountability.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field required.
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible IT experience, including at least four (4) years of formal supervision, managing teams, and multi-functional operations in an enterprise environment;
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational change, building service culture, and delivering measurable performance improvements; higher education or other complex, mission-driven institutional setting strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities.

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to develop, motivate, and hold accountable a diverse team while moving fluently between strategic vision and day-to-day operational demands.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise IT service delivery, including ITSM frameworks, change management, incident response, and broad technical literacy across infrastructure, enterprise applications, end-user services, and educational technology.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills; demonstrated ability to earn trust with faculty, staff, students, senior administrators, and external partners.
  • Comfort operating in a complex, shared-governance environment, with the ability to manage competing priorities and make sound decisions under pressure.
