Teaching Technologist (Embedded Systems)

University of Bristol - School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience
Bristol, CT Full Time
POSTED ON 4/4/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/2/2026
The role

Do you enjoy experimenting with hardware, writing efficient embedded code and exploring how software and electronics interact in the real world? Do you have a keen interest in inspiring the next generation of tech innovators? The University of Bristol is seeking a forward-thinking Embedded Systems Technologist to enhance the learning experience for our undergraduate students.

This role is a hands-on exploration of cutting-edge technology, including TinyML, Edge AI and Internet of Things (IoT) devices and their integration into projects. If you thrive on innovation and love empowering students to bring bold, creative ideas to life, we want to hear from you.

You’ll work on coding for microcontrollers (e.g., STM32, Arduino, ESP32), focusing on real-time firmware development, sensor and actuator integration, communication protocols including UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, TCP/IP and BLE, with opportunities to explore TinyML and Edge AI on microcontrollers such as ARM Cortex-M, ESP32 and RISC-V.

You won’t just teach – you’ll inspire and nurture talent. Collaborating with academic staff and multidisciplinary teams, you’ll develop innovative teaching methods, manage student project labs and resources, oversee budgets and ensure a safe, supportive learning environment. If you have a rare mix of technical expertise, creativity and enthusiasm, combined with a passion for student success, this is your chance to make a lasting impact.

We’re looking for someone who combines strong embedded systems and electronics experience with a passion for hands-on teaching and learning. If you thrive on turning ideas into working prototypes and enjoy empowering others to do the same, we’d love to hear from you.

What will you be doing?

  • You will shape the way the Faculty supports students’ project-based learning and their experiences in using new technologies.
  • You will work to support leading academics to develop and enable novel and practically grounded teaching practices.
  • You will support the day to day operation of the Student Project laboratory.
  • You will exercise initiative and pragmatism to help bring ambitious ideas to life.
  • The role is part operational delivery of specialist support to both undergraduate and postgraduate taught students, and part strategic direction and creative design of complex teaching methods to support Bristol’s academic programme delivery.

You should apply if

  • You’re a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and innovative individual with experience in managing a practical space and working with a team of specialists.
  • You would relish the opportunity to help develop the next generation of engineers.
  • You have experience of financial planning and monitoring budgets.
  • You have demonstrable technical specialism and competence in either current or past in a science, engineering or similar discipline.
  • You have experience of managing continuous improvement of self and others

Why should you apply for this role?

  • We are one of the most popular and successful universities in the UK
  • We are ranked 61st in the QS World University Rankings
  • We are the 3rd largest employer in Bristol
  • We are rated 4.2 / 5 stars on Indeed & 4.3 / 5 stars on Glassdoor
  • We offer competitive pay and rewards, attractive pension scheme, generous leave entitlements, development opportunities and wellbeing initiatives
