Police Officer I - Community Relations - Department Only

Pay Grade/Pay Range: Minimum: $27.21 - Midpoint: $35.38 (Hourly N9)

Normal Work Schedule: Varies; May include holidays, weekends, overtime, and voluntary and mandatory events; Hours are subject to change based on the operational needs of the unit, departments, and the University community.

Job Summary: The Police Officer I - Community Relations works with the University community and surrounding Tuscaloosa community to identify and resolve problems. Serves in the Operations Division. Develops policies and coordinates the department’s community relations function. Organizes, plans, implements, operates, and maintains community relations programs. Represents the department at speaking engagements, training, and presentations. Serves on committees. Develops community policing strategies and identifies training needs through interviews with citizen representatives. Consults with those involved in internal investigations, confers with supervisors, and establishes community groups where needed. Partners with Public Safety Communications and Clery Compliance leadership and staff.

Additional Department Summary: Drives a University vehicle. Must meet and adhere to established guidelines for the use of a UAPD assigned take-home vehicle.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Police Officer I - Community Relations

Must be a current Police Officer I in good standing at the University of Alabama. Must have received a “meets expectations” or higher on most recent performance evaluation. Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.

Police Officer II - Community Relations

Must be a current Police Officer II in good standing at the University of Alabama. Must have received a “meets expectations” or higher on most recent performance evaluation. Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.

Police Field Training Officer - Community Relations

Must be a current Police Field Training Officer in good standing at the University of Alabama. Must have received a “meets expectations” or higher on most recent performance evaluation. Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen. Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.

Skills and Knowledge: Skills and knowledge related to being a Police Officer. Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Strong decision-making, conflict management, and problem-solving skills. Strong teaching and facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism when dealing with conflict. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Proficient in the use of standard desktop software and ability to learn department-specific systems and software.

Preferred Qualifications: Three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer. Experience with public speaking with large crowds.
