About The College/Unit/Department

The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics is one of the four academic units in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with an enrollment of approximately 537 undergraduate and 160 graduate students. Undergraduate programs include Consumer Economics (with an optional emphasis in Applied Consumer Analytics), Social Entrepreneurship, Financial Planning, and Housing Management and Policy (with an emphasis in Residential Property Management). The Department is staffed by 20 faculty members with expertise in consumer decision-making, consumer and family policy, financial literacy, financial planning, housing, and residential property management. Extension and public service faculty provide practical, research-based information to Georgia residents to improve the quality of lives and communities. The department provides research and outreach in support of local government through the Housing and Demographics Research Center.

Position Summary

The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Housing Management and Policy.

Position: Assistant Professor in Housing Management and Policy (nine months, academic appointment, tenure track, 45% research, 50% teaching, 5% service).

The faculty member will have a 45% Research, 50% Teaching, and 5% service nine-month, full-time appointment in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics, but will be expected to collaborate across campus on research, outreach, and teaching. The candidate is also expected to teach courses, with a focus on Housing Management and Policy and Residential Property Management. The candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research agenda and secure external funding on topics related to housing, built environment, and consumer preparedness for natural disasters related to housing.

It is expected that the successful candidate will collaborate with others to grow and/or sustain all scholarly undergraduate and graduate programs and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics. The primary teaching assignment for the individual filling this position will be Housing Management and Policy related courses, preferable courses in the Residential Property Management. The hired faculty member will be required to advise undergraduate and graduate students, participate in departmental and collegiate governance and professional organizations, and pursue active membership in relevant professional organizations.

Additional Requirements

To be considered for the position of Assistant Professor, the applicant must hold an earned doctorate in housing studies, property management, residential real estate, city, regional, or environmental planning, landscape architecture, public policy or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate must show evidence of, or clear potential for, successful teaching at the graduate level and securing external research funding. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, And/or Certification

At least one degree in Family and Consumer Sciences preferred. Two years of work experience or research focused on some aspect of residential property management is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies

The ideal candidate will be someone who can take advantage of research and external funding opportunities in the area of built environment and preparedness of consumers who could be experiencing natural disasters, including planning for emergency, resilience and recovery.
