About The College/Unit/Department

The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics is one of the four academic units in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees with an enrollment of approximately 537 undergraduate and 160 graduate students. Undergraduate programs include Consumer Economics (with an optional emphasis in Applied Consumer Analytics), Social Entrepreneurship, Financial Planning, and Housing Management and Policy (with an emphasis in Residential Property Management). The Department is staffed by 20 faculty members with expertise in consumer decision-making, consumer and family policy, financial literacy, financial planning, housing, and residential property management. Extension and public service faculty provide practical, research-based information to Georgia residents to improve the quality of lives and communities. The department provides research and outreach in support of local government through the Housing and Demographics Research Center.

Candidates must have a doctorate degree at the time of appointment in housing studies, consumer economics, rural/urban/regional planning, emergency and disaster management, public health, public policy or a closely related discipline.

Position Summary

The Department of Financial Planning, Housing, and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Extension in Housing Management and Policy.

Position: Assistant/Associate Professor of Extension for Housing Management and Policy (twelve-month, fiscal appointment, tenure track, expected to be 60% Extension, 25% teaching, 10% research, and 5% service)

Responsibilities

The faculty member will be tenure track and have a twelve-month, fiscal appointment with 60% Extension, 25% teaching, 10% research, and 5% service expectations. The successful applicant must understand and embrace the land grant mission of extension and outreach, including serving the needs of underserved communities. It is expected that the position will demonstrate promise of moving toward excellence in service to Georgia citizens and their families, student instruction, scholarly activities, professional development activities, professional leadership, and/or service to the profession.

The individual will be expected to collaborate with faculty in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics. Expertise in writing and managing grant proposals, familiarity with university grants and contracts, knowledge of IRB/Human Subjects procedures and policies, and the ability to manage many different projects and programs simultaneously is expected. The individual will be expected to have a willingness to serve as part of the Extension disaster management team as the specialist on housing-related issues.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Work with faculty with multiple disciplinary expertise to grow and/or sustain scholarly undergraduate and graduate programs in Housing Management and Policy. Collaborate with the Center for Housing and Community Research, the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH), and FACS and UGA Extension specialists to develop a robust research and outreach agenda. Teach the equivalent of two three-credit undergraduate and/or graduate courses per year in Housing Management and Policy and Residential Property Management. Conduct and disseminate applied research findings through training and materials to County Extension Agents and the general-public, as needed. Collaborate with Extension specialists and agents to conduct community-engaged research and education, applying implementation science to strengthen program delivery while supporting agents in meeting their scholarly expectations and contributions. Obtain extramural funds for research and program funding. Participate in departmental and collegiate governance and professional organizations.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must show evidence of, or clear potential for, successful teaching and securing external research funding.

For an associate professor appointment, candidates must have at least five years as assistant professor (eligible for promotion to rank of associate professor upon appointment) at a comparable institution and clear and convincing evidence of high levels of attainment in teaching and research and commensurate national or international recognition related financial planning, housing and consumer economics. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, And/or Certification

At least one degree in Family and Consumer Sciences preferred. Two years of extension experience or research focused on some aspect of housing and built environment, residential property management, and disaster preparedness is preferred.

To be successful, the individual must be an effective communicator, both orally and written and with a variety of audiences, and must work successfully, both independently and within a team. The ideal applicant will have a commitment to excellence in Extension-related applied and translational research and undergraduate and graduate education.

The ideal candidate will have a strong research and extension agenda focused on natural disaster risk and preparedness, rural health and housing, public service and outreach through Extension, and resilience in housing and consumer well-being.

Knowledge and interest in the connections between health and housing, exterior conditions and indoor environmental health risks and safety hazards, is preferred.
