Position Overview
Unicoi County Schools is seeking a dynamic and student-centered educator to serve in a combined role as:
- Secondary Physical Education Teacher
- Head Volleyball Coach
- Head Girls' Soccer Coach
This individual will provide high-quality physical education instruction during the school day while leading and growing competitive, character-driven athletic programs. The ideal candidate is passionate about student development, promotes sportsmanship and teamwork, and models professionalism in both the classroom and on the field/court. The educator/coach will report to the Principal(s) and Athletic Director.
Qualifications
- BS Degree with appropriate teaching certification from the Tennessee Department of Education
- Eligible endorsement:
- 420 - Physical Education K-12
- Prior coaching and/or playing experience preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) rules and regulations
Primary Responsibilities
I. Secondary Physical Education Teacher
Instruction & Curriculum
- Design and deliver lessons aligned to the Tennessee Department of Education Physical Education Standards
- Utilize varied instructional strategies and groupings to ensure student mastery of standards and skill development
- Prepare and maintain lesson/unit plans and provide documentation upon request
- Administer assessments regularly and use student data to adjust instruction
- Provide learning experiences that support academic growth and 21st-century skills
Classroom Environment & Professional Expectations
- Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment
- Encourage appropriate student behavior and uphold school and board policies
- Maintain accurate records as required by law and district policy
- Communicate student progress regularly with parents/guardians
- Provide detailed substitute plans when absent
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events
- Supervise students at school-related functions (on and off campus)
- Represent the school and district in a positive and professional manner
Safety & Facility Oversight
- Ensure adherence to all safety standards and best practices
- Oversee proper care and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and materials
II. Head Volleyball and Girls' Soccer Coach
Program Leadership
- Coordinate and supervise the entire volleyball and girls' soccer programs
- Develop and implement training systems and game strategies
- Train and support assistant coaches in techniques, philosophy, rules, and strategy
- Promote academic achievement alongside athletic development
Operations & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with TSSAA and district policies
- Attend TSSAA rules meetings
- Develop, communicate, and enforce team expectations
- Manage scheduling, transportation, and program logistics
- Ensure all required physical and eligibility documentation is completed and filed
Supervision & Safety
- Ensure continuous supervision during practices, games, conditioning, and locker room activities
- Enforce training rules and behavioral expectations
- Monitor and report injuries appropriately
- Maintain safe playing environments and proper equipment care
- Maintain continual supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, conditioning, and locker room activities
- Observe all health and safety procedures, including Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan requirements
- Immediately report major injuries to the Athletic Director
Community Engagement
- Build positive relationships with students, families, booster clubs, and community partners
- Promote the girls' soccer program through effective communication and outreach
Community & Public Relations
- Maintain positive public relations with families, booster clubs, media, and community organizations
- Communicate schedules, results, and program updates
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round
- Travel required for athletic events
