What are the responsibilities and job description for the Steam Distribution Maintenance Technician position at UNC Finance and Operations?
This position will serve as a journey level mechanical maintenance technician for the Steam Distribution group, as such it requires intermediate to advanced mechanical, electrical, operational and safety/hazard knowledge and awareness of Steam Distribution and Hot Water Distribution systems, equipment, and associated components. The Steam Distribution and Hot Water Distribution systems are very complex systems. As a technician this position will assist other maintenance personnel and outside contractors in day to day activities and will also work independently at times. Once fully trained, this position could fill-in as a Power-Plant Technician if needed. This position is responsible for routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairs or replacements to the Steam Distribution systems and Hot Water Distribution systems, equipment and associated components, such as but not limited to; system piping, expansion joints, condensate return units, pumps, motors, metering devices, trap assemblies, supply/exhaust fans, pneumatic systems and electrical control systems. This position is also responsible to assist with predictive maintenance programs, such as but not limited to; obtaining meter readings, obtaining steam and condensate samples, and using test devices to take readings. This position requires intermediate knowledge of various tools, such as but not limited to; cutting torches, lathes, drill presses, welding machines, grinders, saws, micrometers, infrared meters, wrenches, pipe threaders, various measuring devices, and etc. This position requires intermediate knowledge of computers, the use of a computerized time management system (TIMS), maintenance management system (MAXIMO), and various training/compliance targets based on responsibilities and work environments is required.
This position is required serve in an on-call rotation, once fully trained.
This position is considered emergency duty and communicable disease mandatory. As such, it must report to work during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency (i.e. pandemic).
